They're definitely a factor, but it also depends on the source material. A lot of people love Re:Zero in general for its characters and story. Does help that, like Re:Zero, we know very little about Zero minus a few chapters of the manga. Some might be turned off by the tiger protagonist, but I've seen some say it's unique. Considering a lot people (myself included) thought this was related to Re:Zero, I imagine a lot will check it out once it begins. We'll see in April.
LOL yeah, I had to dig extra deep a few weeks back to confirm that it was NOT related. And for the first time, I've spoiled myself some through the 4 chapters of manga. How well this series does will depend on how it is executed. I mean, it's a little on the simple or cliched side thus-far.
Don't suppose you have any clue as to why the wolf has a human torso in the one trailer scene, huh? :P Either he was shaved for treatment, or it's some sort of plot point where he's not quite the same class of fallen beast as Mercenary is. So far, though, it looks like a lot of care is taken in Mercanary's animation. A bit less care with the wolf, but I think we all know how extra challenging it is to animate a long muzzle without going majorly overbudget. He's at least not AS badly animated as Ricardo was...

I looked at the chapters myself, but they don't appear to be spoiling anything too major. A 2nd PV has been posted a couple of days ago if you wanna see. Hopefully it does a good job, even if the plot is a bit cliche. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr_8ZXgzGT8
Don't know about the wolf character. I think his name is Holdem. I did find this Tweet so he's probably a major character as well. Mercenary's design is there as well. His clothes look different compared to the manga. Yeah, I kind of imagine it's a lot easier to animate Mercenary talking than a character with a longer muzzle. We'll have to see how they approach it though.

Both the links you shared are 'blue' (visited) so, yeah, I know ;3 Not 100% sure it'll be translated to Holdem with that spelling, but probably. We'll have to see. And cliche or not, I'm definitely looking forward to the first A-list anthropomorphic anime character since Gintaro of Gingitsune. I wouldn't mind a bit more fanservice towards the female anthros though. GATE had a catgirl anthro for a very small portion of it, and Re:Zero had the bathroom scene in the opening episode, but outside of that the closest we've gotten in recent years is maybe Flying Witch with Inukai...
I know in the GATE manga there is a small chapter that's focused on the wolf character and a cat girl, but mostly the former. Other examples of female anthros 'sides Inukai that I can think of is from Monster Musume. To be specific, there's a kobold named Polt and a kitsune named Luz. The former doesn't appear much in the anime itself (the mangaka requested she had a few short appearances), but has a major role in a OVA, while the former does have an episode focused on her. There are more in that series though, at least in the manga.
If you've got any links to clips (or exact episode numbers so I can dig on HS/Nyaa) on Polt or Luz, I wouldn't mind seeing them. I ended up bailing on that series early on because, while it could actually be arousing at times, it seemed like it wasn't going to have anything but human-faced monster characters. I don't remember any wolf characters offhand in GATE, but it does seem to be still socially unaccepted to focus on pure anthros in Japan at this time. That's why I'm hoping some of the recent developments (One Piece Zoa arc, Zootopia/Untertale cultural injections, etc) will gradually shift things to consider more non-human approaches as interesting.
Speaking of Kobolds, Hai to Gensou no Grimgar had a decent arc with them. Pretty neat.

Looks like I may have made a slight mistake. Luz doesn't appear in the anime, but only in the manga (Chapter 32). As for Polt, just look up the Monster Musume OVA since she barely appears in the anime itself.
I don't think many male anthros popped up often in the GATE anime minus a few background characters, though a wolf character did talk with Rory in the manga a few times. I did notice the female anthros in the manga had fur where they didn't in the anime. if I remember correctly. here's the short chapter featuring the wolf and a catgirl, and here's a pretty funny 4 panel page with the wolf. I'd say give the manga a go if you like the anime.
I think it's just that there isn't a huge market for anthro characters in Japan which is why they're usually minor characters at best. They might pop up more later on, but only time will tell. Also yeah, I saw Grimgar when it started airing. Thanks for the link. Some I recognize, some, not so much.

I watch a LOT of anime, but I admit I pretty much stick exclusively to the anime versions. I have a hard time following manga/comic stuff, and it ends up making me frustrated more than satisfied. Even Light Novels just don't feel right for me. Sadly that means I won't see the end of Spice and Wolf. :P I might go through that wolf chapter since it's unlikely it'll be animated even as an OVA. :)
As I said, I do hope recent cultural influences will spark some more experimentation with the non-human tropes. Though dang, I was hoping Demi-chan would have a Werewolf at some point, but it's unlikely that they will expand the cast, and if there's a Werewolf type, it probably wouldn't be 'fully furry', just kemono-mimi.
Watchin' that OVA now. Energetic, hahaha
Oh, I suppose I should also mention Shinsekai Yori. Anthropomorphic naked mole rats, haha.

So, I recognize the 'head maid' lady as the one who owns the mansion that caters to non-humantypes. I definitely remember the cats there being less furred. Also, one close-up of the kitty here gives her the non-furred torso look that the rabbit character disappointingly had from S2. I guess part of what happened was just a lack of real communication with the original creator about how much is fur and how much is markings..?
And uhh, so, why do the wolves wear bloomers? >_>
