My first dedicated shot at anthropomorphism.. This one doesn't have the masked visage I love to draw, and has a much lighter armor scheme- couple that with some changes in physique, and aw jeez a gril watch out for cooties
The original idea from a LONG time ago stemmed from conversation with this clown
elkcip145 ..
This started out as a nurse design (the name "Amber" being a jab at "ambulance"), ended up changing multiple times, and I finally stuck with this. Ideas were not so much abandoned as they were benched- I have plenty of things I could draw..
- EDIT: in my infinite sleepiness and laziness I forgot to explain what the heck was goin on with that wacky tail so here you go
- While completely auxiliary and seldom used, the tail can split apart at its four points and behave as a "mouth". The plates act like a brace for the tail when it twists and opens, giving some structure to the "jaws".. but also keeps things in when the tail returns to form. Even with the semi-amorphous nature of these dragons' innards, the lack of dedicated structure (since it is first and foremost a tail) means this functionality doesn't see use aside from small rocks.
.. or exceptionally cooperative captives.

Most hermit dragons are shy and reclusive, using their hardiness to hide away in frozen wastelands and abyssal waterways. Some aren't quite up to the namesake, digging out their homes in places accessible to dedicated travelers, moving freely in open view or calm water.
Some, stranger still, live close to civilization. Popular mountain ranges offer slopes, springs, and snow; seaside locales with their sun, bays, and lush vegetation.. Is that worth leaving behind?
Amber is stranded somewhere between, living in an expansive system of mountain tunnels. The intermittent sunlight creeping in from above, air flow, and general ease of movement makes it accessible, but the bioluminescent plants, lakeside cavern, and simple immenseness are what keep people coming back. It's something of a point of pride.
She did help make it, after all.
Acting as a caretaker of sorts, she nurses the wounded and guides the wayward, enjoying the pieces of the world they bring with them- stories of their homeland, their unique mannerisms, the places they've been.. but she still doesn't really seek people out. Good friends with the rangers, though!

I feel like I'm not improving so much as I'm trying much harder with each successive drawing- hearing this makes it worth it!
I actually considered "vents" akin to those in your designs, but felt like it'd be in poor form to copycat, however subtly.. so I stuck to my guns with the continuous-split patterns and such!

Loving your art as always. Im also glad to see you improving so much.
Would love a explanation of the tail though.
rather not guess an hope im correct (the "intricate mechanics" of the tail would be nice to know as well if you don't mind)
Also this is just opinion as always but.
She looks almost like a suit rather then a creature.
I think it is cause of the fact it is all black an white. (An the eyes seem a bit anime/human maybe)
Hope my opinion helps or something.
Just tell me if you rather me be quiet.

Well if it helps any.
From my view if i don't look at the head it seems fairly natural. (As you intended i assume)
the head seems to be mostly the cause of the suit look i think.
The eye seems separated from the rest of the body like the eyes are looking out of a suit to some degree.
Again i think it is cause of it all being black an white an therefor not really having the depth control it needs to portray the intended effect.
Do remember i tend to look to deep into pictures so i may be the only one seeing this an there for my opinion may be a bit invalid.
I am loving the description by the way vary short but detailed an to the point with all the necessaries.

Well...that second line of text took my by decent surprise...You want it fast or slow? I also have plenty of pain killers on hand...
If i may ask.
why go intentionally for the mask look?
its your art so do as you like but it seems a bit odd to go so far with the crafted visual to make the head look like a mask intentionally.
As you run the risk of making her look like a actual suit when/if you ever add in color an depth.
Even if it does look like a vary well crafted suit...
