This story was inspired by the Furry Basketball Association. Except for the locale, there is no direct connection between this story and the league per se. Instead, this is a story about the invention of the game of basketball in a furry world.
I combined elements from the creation of basketball by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, as well as what little I could find on the early days of the FBA. As the Biloxi Mudpuppies are one of the original FBA teams and have the oldest court in the league, I moved the setting to somewhere in Mississippi in the mid-late 1950s.
