Connor and Deirdre were lovers, once, when the world was young and they were just children, too innocent and self-absorbed to see what the future held. They held on to each other through fourteen years of brutal warfare and the birth of their daughter, only to be torn away from each other by duty and tradition.
Now, they are the leaders of their little part of the world, one a king, the other the most influential General in a dozen generations. After an all too brief peace they've found themselves at war again, this time against each other, though neither of them would have it that way. In the normal course of events, it wouldn't be so bad. War is only the national sport, after all. Except, this time it isn't just a game. This time, in their pride and their blind adherence to tradition, they might have destroyed the world as they know it and their only daughter as well.

It's nice to see these two at a younger age, perhaps just before everything started to pull them apart. I definitely always felt they kind of in some ways got a raw deal, especially Connor, who just tries to do the right thing despite it always seeming to be the path of most resistance.
I love the footwear and their clothes in general. The artist did a wonderful job of capturing the longing in their eyes and the way they're standing together, not saying a thing, under the starlit sky. Indeed, there are never enough moments of peace like this in life, I imagine this might have been one of the last ones they enjoyed together.
A very moving piece.

It is kind of nice, and I'm rather tempted to get some more art of them together at some point. While I've never actually put much down on paper, I've always enjoyed thinking about how their relationship might have started and how they were when they were together and both still fairly innocent. I agree that they got a pretty raw deal, especially Connor who seemed doomed to get the worst of things no matter what he did. I actually hadn't intended for that to be the case, but that's how things went. Funny how I always end up hurting the characters I love the most. Or maybe not.
I love their outfits, and especially the sandals. I used to ask people to draw my characters in sandals a lot more, since that's meant to be the standard footwear on Viridis, but Corgii is one of the few who actually remembered. The mood of the piece and the way they're looking at each other, each knowing things can never be the way they want it to be, is very moving, I agree, and a big part of what has always made this one of my favorite pictures of any of my characters. I really am very glad you like it, too!

Part of the plus and minus of starting at a certain point in the story and thinking backwards is you come up with all these reasons how things got to now, but they're things you can't really tackle unless you do a prequel. While there's nothing wrong with that, as you know my first two projects emerged from such a notion, it does limit how much time you can spend with them. Nevertheless, it makes it more meaningful I think when you know these characters won't end well, necessarily, but it doesn't make their lives any less meaningful for the time they do have. I imagine maybe in a future project perhaps Deirdre will find the past is not so distant.
The sandals are rather cute here, and I think it's probably one of the few cases I've seen where Deirdre has her hair down, metaphorically speaking.
