The entire Felidae system was destroyed along with all of the inhabitants.

Toby's people were in many ways isolationists - so there were not many outside of their home system.

The who and the why will be revealed much, much later. What will come up sooner is the fact that the Alliance did virtually nothing to help.

Just some World Building notes -- The bulk of the survivors were those fortunate enough to be stationed at one of the outposts near the far edge of the system (which was Toby's case). His father was with him. The rest of his family were on their home world and believed to be casualties.

And yes, Toby and Connor's interactions will be interesting right out of the gate. Exploring the dynamics of Toby and the rest of the Space Pawdyssey characters (Felix, Etzel, Connor and Rowan) is going to be really, really fun mainly because they will be some of the most complex and least straightforward. While Lex's intereactions with the crew will be interesting as well and nearly as complex.

Honestly not long before these guys all start crossing paths. Lex and Felix should meet up here soon.
