Whelp, after watching my buds rocking out, and being totally bad-ass, I decided to go out and get myself a guitar! (actually, I wound up buying two ^^; )
Of course, I know practically nothing about the instrument, other than it's got strings and knobby things... so... yeah... this should be interesting...
Unfortunately, I don't actually have the guitars yet, or my amp, because one needed repair, and the other had to have a hold on it due to the store's regulation on selling used equipment. So I can't show actual photos of my equipment until the 13th of next month. (poo...)
I plan to get some cases for the guitars when I finally get them, along with some picks, and a cable to hook up to my amp. I figured that there wasn't really any point to get that other stuff now, not to mention that I spent WAY too much money this month! (remember, I also got a $2000 laptop last week) ^^;
I know that I shouldn't be spending my money on this crap, but you know what? I really don't give a shit anymore! My life really can't get much worse, so why not do something that might give me a little bit of happiness? And if I get good enough, then maybe I'll be able to jam with my friends, and not feel like such a fifth wheel.
As for learning the guitar, I actually found this video game that actually teaches you how to play the guitar! And I'm NOT talking about fuckin' Guitar Hero! (that game irritates the hell out of me... mostly because of the idiots that keep claiming they know guitar because they play that stupid game...)
The game I found is called "Rocksmith," and it DOES actually teach you how to play guitar, because instead of using a controller in the shape of a guitar, you have to use a real guitar! It's pretty impressive actually. You plug your guitar into the computer (or gaming console) and the game is actually able to detect what chords you play, and will supposedly adapt to your skill level, and create a personalized lesson plan!
They creators of the game claim that the game can teach a person to play the guitar, and play it well within 60 days! So I think I'm gonna put that theory to the test! Let's see if their game can get someone as clueless as me to be jamming like a pro in just 60 days!
Also, this gives me the chance to test out the capabilities of my new laptop! ;3
I think that will be my new New Year Resolution; to learn the guitar!

Interesting. ^^ But I will tell you now I think I have been playing guitar well for. Two to three years now? I think. And I actually learned how to play it off of rocksmith. Eh the detection system isn't the greatest at time but in all honestly if you play outside of the game then you know. You won't get a "miss" or "late" or "early" in real life so. XD
Kinda judge that off your ears. :p
Now what I personally did was I would learn the lessons that it would give me and instead of just practicing off of the game I practiced just by myself with my amp. But that is just me. I think it got me to get familiar with what it wanted me to do and I got a better understanding and ability to play the techniques.
But best way for most people to get the jest of guitar, is play songs you know. ^^ Which. Is pretty much a given.
But the game is great and it does teach you how to play. The thing is guitar isn't that hard to play really. It's just all the techniques and all those strumming patterns you do.
Yeah, you'll learn chords and such like that. It's really all about just muscle memory. :3
But the game doesn't really teach you about a few things, like tones with amps and such like that.
That is kind of a thing you would like to look into. Because tone is obviously what sound comes out of the amp from the guitar.
And my big saying is that someone can be "shitty" (Everyone has their different skill levels. :3 ) but can have really good tone. I always consider tone to be the biggest thing to get a better understanding of. Just as much as those techniques and all.
And yeah, if you got any questions and stuff you do got those friends of yours to help so. ^^
But guitar is pretty fun to play. And the game does have a path chooser. Lead (Pretty obvious what lead is. :p ) Rhythm. I do play lead mostly but I do like rhythm a lot more and well...Because I can't really move my fucking fat fingers quick farther down the neck and they fingers won't fit there well. XD
So. Well playing through that game just try to figure out what your comfortable with, and your play style. I'm personally a very bluesy sounding kind of player but I certainly don't mind cranking up the distortion and getting some rock and metal tones out. ;3
But how you sound, play, and all that is your play style. Everyone who plays does have a unique way of playing no matter what.
But there is a lot of things you can learn by just playing so. Have fun. :3

Well, I wasn't really under the impression that the program was perfect, but I'm hoping that it works well enough to teach me a few songs, and give me a little bit of the feeling of playing with others in a band.
But I was also looking at getting some song books to maybe help me get started too, (like 3 chord songs) but I wanna see what is in the game before I get something like a 3 chord song book, since the game probably has songs like that, which would make it redundant.
I was also looking at a few other books, including some songs from Pink Floyd, Metallica, and Dethklok ^w^
I did get myself an amp along with Rocksmith, and I'll probably be playing a lot on that as well, since I won't be able to always have the program open in front of me, and I'll have to see if I can play them from memory (that would be the ultimate test of that ghame).
Plus there are lots of songs that I would love to learn, that I'm sure Rocksmith does not include (like "Awesome as I Wanna Be" and Nightmare Before Christmas's "This is Halloween" ;P )
I'm hoping that I can get good enough to listen to a song or tune, and be able to play something that sounds like it on my guitar (though that will probably a few years down the road)
Though I'm kinda hoping that I will have been able to learn a few songs by Babscon in April, and perhaps be able to jam with some bronies at the con.
That's pretty cool that you play guitar too! do you perhaps go to some of the cons? It would be pretty awesome if we could meet up and play a jam or two! ;3

Eh true. And yeah. 3 chord song books? Usually a lot of songs have 4 chords. >.< Which in all honesty. You can learn a whole bunch of songs with just 4 chords. .w.
But Pink Floyd sure isn't that all that hard to play. Just memory but the soloing parts is very technical. I certainly have tried a few and I think I got it down for the most part. And both those bands are metal. Very technique styles really. :p But it's not bad to learn them. :3 But certainly trying out styles you don't know or ones other then those three would be nice.
And true. The game does have a master mode. (Which basically the notes will become invisible at some point if you learn the song enough. ) And yeah playing something by ear takes a lot of years to get down. Or just natural talent. :P
And I see. And no I'm not a con person. >.< I never thought of going to one ever.

Yeah, I saw a couple books at the guitar store that were 3 chord songs, and then there were some 4 chord and 5 chord books.
I figured that Pink Floyd might be easier to learn while listening to one of their songs, since their music tends to move quite a bit slower than stuff like System of a Down. Plus I LOVE Pink Floyd's music! The book I saw was songs from The Wall, and so I was pretty much drooling all over it. XP
If they still have that book when I go back, I think I might grab it. ;3
That's good to know, so I can basically play with just the music going and use the other players as a guide, like as if I was playing with others in an actual band. That's pretty sweet.
What!? Why not? The cons are awesome! Being at a con was the first time I actually felt like I could be myself around others, like, EVER! You should totally go! And then we can hang out! I can guarantee you that I will be just as awkward as you! XP

Ah I see. Well still you can learn quite a lot with chords. I don't know many myself but most of the time you won't really run into anything unfamiliar at most when you start getting better and all. Pink Floyd is slower tempo'd but the man's lead guitarist can shred up and down the neck like nothing. The chords aren't hard to do but if your looking to play those solos then yeah it's going to take a bit of getting use to being on those higher frets and all that.
And that is good, if you learn the song enough and you got it down by memory then the track for those songs the notes will disappear and you just play by what you remember.
Now playing outside. I've said before guitar isn't all that hard of a instrument to learn. Hell you don't even need to know how to read music and all that. It's more of a expressive kind of thing.
Playing with an actual band, I do play with a band but not like a bunch of random people put together. All I'll tell you is that just do whatever you feels right in those situation. But you wouldn't know the time signature they are in, and key their in.
So I would suggest learning up on the circle of fifths. But eh that's up to you. But playing outside of the game is obviously quite different.
And I see. XP Well if I ever go to one I guess I'll inform you but I doubt it will be any time soon.
