Rolling in the new year with a new ref for Mister Grim, which has frankly been a long time coming. He's had new colors for awhile now and that old art seriously needed an update. As you can see I got rid of the other outfit and just added a casual variant of his tailcoat, which I think works a lot better. I think this is quite a bit of improvement for 2.5 years, so I'm pretty proud of how this turned out.
The fonts I used are Neverwinter, Zombie Holocaust, and Yataghan, and were all downloaded from brushez.com, a great site if you're looking for free fonts.
-Character Overview-
-Name: Ridley Thomas Avery. However, many years ago he shed his birth name and instead christened himself Grim. This is the name most wolves know him by.
-Other Names: The White Ghost, The White Demon, and several more variations of those two.
-Species: Gray wolf
-Sex: Male
-Sexuality: Asexual. He will flirt shamelessly if the need arises, but finds the whole concept of sex really gross and hard to understand. Like: “People actually DO that? That sounds extremely unsanitary.”
-Age: 21 (this is a fantasy story where they have human-like personalities and a human-like society, so, in turn, they have human lifespans).
-Birthday: October 24th
-Height: Exceptionally tall. He stands about a head higher than your average male wolf.
-Build: Thin and gangly, with disproportionately long legs and large paws.
-Scars: Two deep scars over the right side of his muzzle.
-Distinct Features: Grim’s most prominent feature (besides his albinism) is probably his hair tuft, which clumps together at the tip forming that cute little quiff. He has fluffy ears, tufts of spiky fur on his muzzle, long fur on his neck, and an overall scraggly, disheveled pelt. The color of his eyebrows and mouth is (obviously) an exaggeration employed to make them easier to see. If drawn realistically, his lips would be pink as would the skin around his eyes, and, of course, he wouldn't have eyebrows.
-Medical Conditions: Albinism and, as a result, photophobia (extreme sensitivity to bright light). He also has a tendency to sunburn very easily, so this combined with his photophobia means he almost never goes out during the day.
-Accessories: A pinstripe tailcoat, top hat with curved sides which covers one of his ears, and a pair of red-tinted goggles make up the outfit he uses while performing. If he's wearing the jacket casually around town he may roll up the sleeves and wear his goggles propped up on his head. The goggles can also be worn individually, and are usually only worn over his eyes if he's doing some pyrotechnic work or when the sun is out, to protect his eyes.

-Grandmother (maternal): Evelyn Avery (deceased)
-Best Friend: Corvin, a male common raven who was saved and nursed back to health by Grim after being attacked and left for dead by a lynx. He’s been unquestioningly loyal to Grim ever since, and the two are rarely ever apart from each other. Although Corvin can’t speak Grim’s language, he seems to understand everything the wolf says, and uses noises and body language to get his point across to him.
-Residence: Grim lives in the abandoned Highpeak Cemetery, and has a made a vast, ornamental mausoleum into a sort of miniature house. The mausoleum was erected, but never used after a tragedy destroyed the town of Highpeak, prompting the bodies to be laid to rest elsewhere. As a pup Grim stumbled upon it and used it to shelter from the oncoming winter, and has lived there ever since. Most wolves believe the cemetery to be haunted, and that Grim is just one more restless spirit calling the cursed grounds his home.
-Talents: Grim is extremely intelligent and can pick up on things very quickly, and because of this he’s developed a wide range of abilities over the years. His primary talent is undoubtedly his skill as an illusionist, which has allowed him to make a living in a town which harbors an irrational fear of him. He’s learned everything from simple sleight of hand to advanced pyrotechnics to entertain the crowd, but also has a special affinity for card tricks. He’s also taken to tinkering with and even inventing various gadgets, most of which are gathering dust in his home, having no place in the outside world. He’s a bit of a kleptomaniac, thrilling in his ability to sneak everything from money to valuable objects right out from another wolf’s nose. He has no real need for most of the things he takes, and more often than not he’ll just return them the next day. He’s more interested in proving he can take something than actually having it in his possession. The one thing he’ll hoard shamelessly are books, which he keeps in untidy piles around his home. Grim also has a beautiful singing voice, which he only ever uses in the privacy of the graveyard and the forest, with only his raven friends to hear him. However, the haunting melodies do occasionally make their way down the mountain, further contributing to the rumor that a ghostly apparition haunts the Highpeak Cemetery.

-Personality: As mentioned above, Grim is extremely intelligent. He has a talent for manipulation, for getting into people’s heads and toying with their emotions. He can very, very charming if the situation calls for it, but if hurt he has the ability and the will to hurt you ten times as hard. He won’t kill you, but he’ll make you wish you were dead. He’ll work his way into your mind, read your emotions, and hit you exactly where he knows it will hurt you the most. He can be extremely devious, and like a child he revels in his ability to impress people, to wow them with his skill and intellect. In casual conversation he seems cold and sarcastic, always acting like he’s one step ahead of you (which he probably is). However, the most surprising thing about Grim is probably the fact that all of this, more or less, an act. Abandoned by his mother and left for dead, driven out of town, and met with cruelty and hatred at every turn, a loving, kind pup formed a cold outer shell to protect himself from the world. Underneath it all is a wolf not only possessing great intelligence and great talent, but also great kindness. His heart is vast and capable of great, abiding love, but also capable of being horribly, unimaginably hurt. The things that he pretends don’t bother him, the stares, the way other wolves point at him as he walks by, have turned him bitter towards the world. He drowns his hurt in a need for vengeance, a need to show up the world, but underneath all that Grim is still searching for that love he could never find. Only the ravens he rescues and cares for (and Corvin in particular) ever get to see his vast heart and his capability for a love he would have been fully prepared to give to the world, had it not turned its back on him.

- Grim lives in a sort of Victorian-like world where wolves are basically the equivalent of humans.
- The world in which Grim lives is highly superstitious and albinos like Grim are considered a curse, a reflection of some sin their family has committed. Because of this wolves like Grim are universally hated and very often driven away from places they try to settle.
- Grim loves ravens and would fight to the death to protect one. A female raven named Violet saved him from starvation as a pup, and he’s had a kinship with them ever since. Like him, ravens suffer a lot from superstition, and he finds many injured or even dead due to acts of cruel ignorance. Many of his former patients stick around the graveyard where he lives (or at least in nearby territories), but only Corvin has formed such a strong, lasting bond with him.
