Personally, I envision at their initial meeting, Haunt attempting to needle and find weaknesses in Magnum like he does everyone else... and it just falling flat in the face of Magnum's collected, knowledgeable nature. So he just stopped bothering and started treating him more like a conspirator, because Magnum likes stirring thigns up, too. (though perhaps for less cynical reasons)
