I did this while Beatrix was being published by Vision Comics. Darrell Benvenuto wanted to do a t-shirt, and I think that's why I did it. (It's also possible it was an independent idea -- it was a while ago and my memory seems to be belling me "file not found".) My luck was typical. He never used the art, but picked some random panel out of issue 1 and ran an ad for the t-shirt based on that. In the event, I don't even think the shirt was ever made, just advertised. I suspect nobody pre-ordered it, and I'm not surprised. After that I tried to interest a new publisher in using the design for one of their coffee mugs. But they weren't hot on the idea, *ahem*. Nor did I do any more issues of Bea.
Why hasn't it been posted before? Fell through the cracks I suppose. But I think, also, I was holding back on art I was still selling prints of. still have the prints, but I'm not selling any, so I guess there's no reason not to give all you deadbeats the art for free.

I can see why Darrell didn't use the pic- I could see it also as a slap at vision (given the cup has the Vision Comics logo) and a VERY pissed Bea.... :)
...Of course, he deserved it, too.... All that even DARES to be mentioned is the American Journal of Anthropomorphics to rankle the artists who submitted works to....
Good use of reflection and colour... :) Cleavage shot doesn't hurt, either... ;)

I always felt treated fairly, even generaously by Darrell, even if a lot of other people claim not they weren't.
For one thing, it was spelled out in black and white in the contract that payment for material in AJA wsa contingent on sales. That meant Darrell had to make money on the Journal before there were any royalities. I don't know how much plainer that can be. Yet most of the complaints I've heard were that no-body was paid for AJA, as though they hadnt understood a word of the agreement.

I met him at CF '97, since my copy of the then-latest issue, sent Priority Mail, was MIA for a month, so he gave me a replacement copy. (The errant copy did arrive AFTER the con...)
Alot of it was how he was funnelling all the AJA monies that were supposed to go to the artists to his then-failing medical parts & supplies business, then got into hot water with the NY police over his bookkeeping. The money WAS there, but got shoved elsewhere to cover his own debts not related to Vision/AJA.
He seemed affable and very business-like when I met him.
AJA never got past the third or fourth issue. I have all of them.
Vision was started AFTER the AJA, but because of the fiasco, it was a bad rep from the experience that did in Vision. Nice ideas, lousy execution. Darrell should never have tied it in with his medical parts company- It should've been completely separate.

All of that could be. It's an extremely common mistake made by people must better in business than I'd say Darrell was. They go to jail over it sometimes, too.
From what I knew of Darrell, he'd made quite a bit of money refurbising obsolete computers for medical use. Perhaps it fell on hard times when clinics discovered they could buy new PC's for a song, and not have to settle for obsolete junk.
After Vision folded, Darrell went into animation. How that worked out, I have no idea. He then married into a wealthy Phillapino family. I guess I've lost touch with him by now, though we have touched bases on occasion after his marriage.
I always did think Vision threw away too much money on their presence at cons.
One reason I think I tended to get along with Darrell was that he regarded me as more literate, and having broader interests than most other furry artists he met.

Yeah, but now and then you just *have* to call somebody a "deadbeat". It's good for the soul.
It would probably work better as a coffee mug, true. For one thing, it would be self-referential.
Yeah, reading the book is a good idea. There's a site you can do it, too. I gave them permission this year to post the books, since I wasn't doing brisk business in them anymore. For that matter, I only have a handful left of both #1's.

Ah sweet! A color version, with an extra opening! And not one, not two, but three naked little Bea's. I'll have to see if I can get a copy of those to add to my B&W ones.
And thanks for posting the pic! I'd was interested in seeing what it looked like. And yeah, the self referencing does make it a great mug idea, even if I don't use them myself. I certainly wouldn't mind having it as a t-shirt either. Also, looking at the ad in the online comic version, I wouldn't be opposed to having a nicely made one, with sexy nekid Bea bunnies on it, as well.

The odd thing about that was that Darrell was so hot on making Bea "family friendly". One of the things he insisted on when we republished the first b/w issue in full colour was that we white out all the nips and naughty bits! So what's he do? Turns around and advertises a t-shirt with Bea nekkid! Maybe he was just being canny, knowing what furries would buy. But he should have realized that furries were also the only people who were going to buy the book, too.
Yeah, definitely. And I hate stupidly censoring things like that, for no good end, just because they think they need to be prudish. I mean, look at other regular 'superhero' comics (which I'd have to assume is the same type of group he had in mind), and most of them wear practically nothing either. And then putting that very thing in the exact same comic you censored out of the rest of it, sort of defeats the purpose.
They weren't around long, and Darrell made the mistake (I think) of cutting down his con going about the time he launched the comic line. Most of his travels were when he was dealing the Journal of Anthropomorphics. He didn't have much product either. Apart from Bea, he aslo did a recipe book by that foxie-artist. I know there were a couple of other titles, but they apparently aren't memorable. Then he published four novels, including one I won't comment on by Paul Kidd (haven't read it). The covers were extremely amateurish looking, though, and none of the authors were anyone the public would know. It came as no surprise to me Vision was out of business after a year or two.
It was the best freakin' furry comic ever produced, of course! At least I have my opinion on that.
Why not read for yourself?

Theres another issue one, but it's the same story in black & white. (Also, the colour edition includes a "prequel" story that had appeared in Albedo.)
There's only Valiant Varmints to find, then. Bea appears in one story segment (that I wrote and drew). I have no more copies for sale, though. You could try Ed Zolna's mail order site, or contact Shanda Fantasy Press, who may have a few copies left.
