The way I do it is, first off, right-clicking the [Properties] tab, and then enabling [Show Hidden Properties]. That lets me see not only the "Scale" sliders, but also the "Scale X", "Scale Y" and "Scale Z" sliders. Then I increase the thickness of limbs to whatever I want--if they're too long, I can make them shorter. Too wide from the front, make them thinner. Too thin from the side? Make them thicker.
