This needs a little explanation. It has a context, just not on FA (beyond the character)
On the O Gauge Railroading Online Forum, in the "Three Rail O gauge Trains" section, is a weekly feature orchestrated by one of the regular posters known as "Weekend Photo Fun". Forum members post pics of their model trains, layouts, etc.
Occasionally the thread goes a bit off-topic, as it did this weekend [link]. Somebody posted a pic of their under-construction layout with their dog sleeping contentedly beneath the woodwork. This led to a string of members posting pics of their dogs along with the train photos. Noting the consistency of train+dog photos (and some posts that were just dog shots) I came up with the idea to throw a curveball into the procession by posting a cat pic.
Since I don't own any pets, I chose to draw one of my characters holding a well-known O-Gauge train controller, (an MTH Electric Trains DCS remote), to make it somewhat on-topic. Cynthia got the honors, as somehow it's appropriate to see her sticking her tongue out at the viewer. As it turns out, someone did manage to get in a cat-on-layout pic while I was drawing this (it took about five hours start-to-finish), but by then I was fully committed. My post occurs near the bottom of the second page of the thread.
Technical:
This one wasn't inked. To speed things along (Ha!) I twiddled the levels on the scanned pencils, did some minor cleanup, made some layers, and then painted sloppy flats on each layer, which were then trimmed down to the linework before applying shading and highlights. It's a similar method to what I've witnessed on some Ustream sessions (notably shizuki's). I could concievably have made a Ustream of this project, but this was purely a spur-of-the moment pic, spurred by a situation I did not forsee. Also, I haven't decided if I can work quickly enough for a Ustream audience)

Oh, that... well I've been on that forum since 2000, so I've gained enough credibility with train-related subjects that it doesn't matter. The regulars know my nick at conventions like the one I'm going to next friday (hint: its about 4x the attendance of Anthrocon :) )
Oh, we'll get plenty of pot stirrers now that we've decided to go after high-speed rail (LOVE TRAINS BUT OMG TAXES!!)
Good thing our moderators lock threads that go political. Another forum at modeltrainjournal.com calls the OGR forum "North Korea" because of that

Oh, that's right--you're into the train sim scene. Have you seen/heard of OpenBVE?
Here's a demo of what it appears to be capable of :link
My jaw dropped when I saw this video. It's come a long way from it's roots. And I believe the 3D objects are still mostly done without traditional modeling apps.

Depends on the skill (and patience) of the person writing the route (in this case, one of the top BVE route coders), but this appears to be what the program can do at the 1.0 release.
OpenBVE itself was reverse-engineered from the original BVE (by one person in about a year), and can even run the older routes (albeit with less functionality)
