On the "French / freedom" renaming, I always thought it was a pretty juvenile and petty act on the part of certain people. A local newspaper cartoon here around the same time summed it up: a picture of the Statue of Liberty with an American police officer announcing "STAND BACK EVERYONE! We're blowing it up because it was a gift from those slimeball, peacenik French..."
