Variations for String Orchestra on an old Welsh hymn tune (known to most Christians as "Guide me, O Thou Great Jehovah".
This piece was written in loving memory of my Auntie Nancy, a Welshwoman, who died in early October of 2004. She will be sadly missed.She came to this country after WW2 to marry my Uncle Art. They lived together in Ottawa for many years before she died.
Guide me, O thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim though this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty;
Hold me with thy powerful hand;
Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven,
Feed me till I want no more,
Feed me till I want no more.

Your orchaestrations are amazing. What program do you use to transpose them? I have Finale Notepad, but unfortunately in the free version there is no way to produce Midi's or Mp3's from the piece. I've written two albeit short pieces myself, around a minute each, not nearly as advanced technically as yours, but I'd love to be able to share them with others and I don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on a professional copy of music software. Have any tips?
Hmm...how much did that cost you? Finale NotePad 2006, the version I have is free, but it doesn't have that function. Actually there are a lot of things it can't do, like change key or time signatures in the middle of a composition, but the one I'm more concerned about it the making of MP3, WAV or MIDI. Do youu happen to know of any free programs that can save in sound formats? Or, I know this is a lot to ask, but if I sent you the Finale file could you save it as an MP3 and send it back to me?
Finale is quite expensive, but I had a friend with the software and he lent it to me.
A lower-key version is called Finale Allegro. Not sure what the latest version of it can do. It's like an intermediary between Notepad and Finale. It's great for a lot of amateur composers 'cause it's less expensive and can do everything they want it to do.
Myself, I need a lot of the functions of Finale (like the ability to create large scores, NP and Allegro both have restrictions to the number of staves)
