The courtroom was eerily silent. The judge - an elderly luminari, silvered hair mussed from his abrupt rousing from slumber - stared over the edge of his spectacles at the comparatively tiny fox.
"So. Let me get this straight.
Aggravated assault. Possession of stolen property. Destruction of local structures. Invoking of forbidden magics. Arson. Evading arrest..."
"Thugs, they attacked me first, I relieved them of their worldly burdens, some buildings got in the way." The fox shrugged.
"...AND contempt of court." The luminari scowled. "How do you plead?"
"That this city is a blight upon the landscape and embarrassment to fishdogs?" A derisive snort. "Not guilty, obviously."
"Mister...er..." The judge gazed back over at the docket. "Mister..."
"Virmir, if you'd please." The fox rolled his eyes. "I arrived here not forty minutes ago after a tumultuous ride at sea, and my greeting was to be beset by savages - savages I left alive, a reminder - and extracted the proper amount of justice - the absence of which appears to be the norm in this forsaken environ-'
"SILENCE!" The judge had had enough. "I'll not have my court so easily overrun. Hold that tongue of yours."
The fox rolled his eyes.
"Now. You'll have two options, Mister Virmir. You can pay restitution to those affected by your casually destructive tendencies..."
A snort. "Oh, yes, an excellent display of justice. Truly."
"QUIET! Or you can pay your way through two rounds at Reaper's Court."
A set of murmurs in the background. The fox raised an eyebrow. "Sounds lovely. And what if I say no?"
It was the judge's turn to snort. "Then there's enough firepower within this court that we can toss what's left of you into the sea."
An uneasy smile. "Wondrous. The Court, then, seeing as I seem to be allergic to your currency."
"Good." The judge leaned forward, and a jet of shimmering energy blasted forth. Virmir recoiled, but his reflexes, reduced by the lengthy trek, were not fast enough. The glow of rich energy rippled up and over his fur - fur that was already beginning to shimmer and glom over into so much rubber.
"What fresh hell..." He twisted as his tail began to fill out, lengthening.
"You'll be one of ours a moment; the Court is for luminari only. Since you're something of a...foreigner, we'll have to make adjustments." The judge smirked. 'Dismissed!'
Virmir hissed under his breath, even as the vulpine muzzle began to blunt. Oh, when he got out of there...
