It was a sunny but cold day, and it had snowed the night before. A fresh blanket of white covered the earth, and TJ sat on the couch, staring out the window at it. He longed to go out with his friends, but he had to make up all the work he mislocated throughout the school year. Here he was, wasting Christmas break filling out all these stupid worksheets.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door--TJ's friend, Gus, was wondering if he could come out and play. Fortunately for TJ, Mrs. Weaselton was out at the store, leaving TJ's dad in charge. "I'm sure you can go out and play for a few hours--just be sure that you finish at least five worksheets after dinner. No lollygagging." TJ was out the door like a bolt of lightning, getting his coat on, and almost tripping himself with his crutches.
In the meadow adjacent to the neighborhood, lots of kits and cubs were playing: snowball fights; sledding; and a few snowmen were being built. Soon, TJ and Gussy had a magnificent one all to themselves. They were convinced that it was the best one there, and stood back to admire it before TJ had to go back and finish the dreaded schoolwork.
