Yep, it's a shield generator, good observation! And I'm glad to know the design is clear enough that the viewer sees what the object is intended for just by the visual :)
And yes, it's a load-bearing exoskeleton, strong enough to easily carry the heavy weapon and ammo around with greatly reduced stress on the wearer's muscles.
Completely armored suits need bulkier exoskeletons of course, but this one can do the intended job, the modern materials used allow for a relatively light profile but good power and durability.
