One day when Ciara was still very young, Connor invited her up to see him in his throne room. It was rare for her to get to see him and even rarer for them to meet in such a public place, so of course she was excited. She spent most of the visit exploring the great room, trying to memorize every corner of it and the way it felt to be there with her father. It was only after she'd grown tired of exploring that Connor sat down on his throne and beckoned for her to join him. He took her up in his lap and gave her a kiss on the top of her head, the way he did sometimes when she was feeling sad. But when she looked up at him, he didn't look back at her.
"Be young while you can," he said "One day, too soon, you will learn that, for us, there are no choices in life. There are only duties that wrap you in chains stronger than any iron."
It took Ciara almost thirty years to understand what her father meant. For a time she thought that she'd escaped, and her life was her own. Only now, as she prepares to take her throne for the first time, she can see that he was absolutely right.

This is lovely, truly. Her expression is perfect and the story is perfect as well. Leadership IS a burden- to those that are good leaders. They take it because they must. Those that desire it... they want it so they can savor it and construct their "utopia."
Reluctant leaders are the best, for they seek the welfare of others, seek the betterment of their own people and indeed the betterment of all people. They see limits to their power.
Those that desire power are common, they always have great reasons for their election...
But this Queen is worthy of service and I should gladly bend my knee to her service. If she saw in me anything attractive, I should be willing to serve other needs as well...
Be that as it may, the art is beautiful. Well done. Please do keep up the good work, all of you!
In other words, I really enjoyed this. Thanks again for sharing.

Well said, and I quite agree. On the whole, those who seek power are those you should be wary of while those who have it thrust upon them are more likely to take their responsibility more seriously. Which isn't to say that Ciara doesn't have her faults, as do we all, but she has always tried to act responsibly and to take the welfare of her people into consideration over any considerations of personal power. It likely helps that she spent most of her life living as just an ordinary person and never would have taken the throne if the only other surviving heir hadn't been her nine-year-old half-sister.
As far as service goes, she would be perfectly willing to accept your service if you wished to offer it. But having people kneel to her kind of embarrasses her, so a simple, polite bow would be more than sufficient.
I'm really glad you liked the art. Firetally does great work and this has always been a favorite of mine. I'm glad you liked the silly little blurb I threw together for this piece, too. And thank you for your kind and thoughtful comments!

Oh man, I love that dress so much. :) She just rocks that black gown. ;)
I've always thought that the best leaders do not seek power, as has been said the best leaders have power thrust upon them. They take the burden because they must. They may not choose that path but to leave it to anyone else is unthinkable. I know that Ciara takes a while to understand the gravity of the decisions her father makes and the burden of responsibility. It is perhaps the reason why she and Lauren get along so well, as they both wear their titles understanding what it means to possess them.
Perhaps it is one of the reasons Talwyn masters are chosen by their predecessors and not by the people, for one can desire to be one all one wants, but only those worthy are given the responsibility.
I love the way Ciara is standing beside the throne but not seated in it. Perhaps a metaphor for wielding power without succumbing to its charms. It works on many levels.

Oh same here. I'd love one of my very own, if I though I could look even half as good as she does in it!
I've always felt so, too, and it's something I've always tried to show with Ciara. Even though she comes from a royal family, on her father's side at least, and even though she ended up with all this power, it's something she takes very seriously and only because she must. She'd much rather have stayed in her old life, and at the risk of spoiling things, part of the point of the new novel is to address how she deals with suddenly being queen like this. I just hope that I've managed to hold on to the right sort of feeling with it.
I'd imagine that the masters would maybe have a better feel for who can handle the position, and the responsibilities that come with it, than other people could, as well. I'm sure that a lot of people would just see the flashy side of things, and not think about what being a master would really mean. Not to mention they'd have a much better chance to get to know any possible candidates more personally than other people would, too.
I really like that detail, too. I can't remember if I asked for it or if that's something the artist chose to do, but it does seem to capture just the feeling of having power but not wallowing in it. Plus I'd imagine it would be very strange for someone like Ciara, who loved both her father and step-mother so much, to suddenly be in their place like that.

I hear that, if I could have a figure like Lauren's in that red dress... Thank goodness for fursuits. :)
It's one of the things that attracted me to you in the first place. I never felt like I so often do with a lot of people that Ciara's position was unearned or because 'reasons'. It felt real and organic. So many people make their character the grand poobah without actually justifying it to new readers and such. It's a big turn off for me. If you're a princess, don't be the useless kind that's afraid of mice and wants a handsome prince. Show me why you're worthy of the throne.
Like any system, it's not perfect, they've had bad masters at times, but by and large the group consensus of new masters keeps them mostly above board, even if they may not always agree.
Either way, it really adds another layer to the image, which I think is definitely worthwhile. I always love when you can look at a picture and interpret more than just face value.
