You know what's funny? New leaf has a few things that the original Animal had, and while they are updated and changed to reflect the newer generation of the games, they are still throwbacks to a degree.
You have the train system, Kappn's Ferry Service, and Gulliver; the last of those returns as a sailor and washes up on your beach like he did in the original Animal Crossing.
