A mod is technically any custom change you make to an avatar's body parts (it's short for "modified"). The skin is just one kind of mod. :D
I made the skin's texture myself using a customizable pack that 1st Act had put out a one point, specifically made for that body. It took quite a bit of work, but I finally got it to match correctly.
There's lots of different ways to try and mod things, but it tends to take a lot of experimentation (which, in turn, can cost money for the nicer resources). I haven't been actively online in a long while, though, so I'm not sure what new ways to do things there are, if any.
