Maybe it's just me, but if I were going to pick someone for as important a position as a Talwyn master, I don't think aggression is what I'd look for. Of course, things might be different if you're in the middle of a war, but I'd want someone with a cool head and a reputation for thoughtfulness. Which are qualities that Lauren has always had in abundance, I think.
I'm so used to think of Lauren as she is in the present, as far as story lines go, it's always interesting to get a bit of a glimpse back at where she started.

Each Talwyn master looks for different things from master to master, and from discipline to discipline. Like any position it varies depending on who is in it at the time, but Lynn at least at this point doesn't have that much confidence in what she's seen in Lauren up to this point. While the war is still some time away at this point this is one of the flashpoint events in the universe that gets it going. Lucas had the opportunity to review the candidates and pick who he wanted, and he chose Lauren mainly because she thinks and uses her powers in unconventional ways.
When the story became a comic and then went back to a story it made me think of ways to maybe build up to where I started, and I had the added challenge of recalling many of the characters do not meet until the present day comic at the soonest, so I had to keep them in the clusters they were in before the events of the war forced them together. As such, a lot of the characters which initially had very small roles got to be expanded, like Lucas and Lynn.
