You got him totally right
His Markings are actually based on a skull, with the black eyeholes, no nose and no ears. The first version had a extended mouth which was smiling formed. With the time his mouth became normal, but the smiling stay now as marking. Because
Ori seems and acts to be a proud and hard man, but he's actually a broken heart today. So yeah, the smile is always their to hide his true face
