Though I have drawn Batgirl as a naga before, this is is more of a revisiting than a redraw.
A while back, I drew a series called "That was Canon?", featuring some of the transformations featured in mainstream comics. It was a fun series, one that I hope to revisit some day with the many transformations that were not covered in the first run. Among these was the transformation of Barbara Gordon, AKA Batgirl, from Detective Comics #516-517. In the story, Batgirl fights against the villainous lamia/naga Lady Viper, and is transformed into one herself after being bitten by the snake-woman. It was a fun story that really showcases a lot of why I love this character so much. Despite the shock of being transformed into a lamia by the evil Lady Viper, Barbara manages to reject the feral instincts that overcome her adversary, but still use her transformation to win the day through skill, foresight and sheer willpower. It was a great showing for one of my favourite comic heroes and a great transformation, and I was happy to know that this happened in the long history of the character, assuming that Lady Viper would vanish like so many others into the backlog of comics trivia, never to be seen again as Batgirl goes on to further adventures.
Then she came back.
The latest "reboot" of the DCU has made a lot of changes with Barbara with her new "Hipster-look", adding a fresh new take on her to great effect. Recently, the storyline has seen Barbara reuniting with new interpretations of her previous team, the Birds of Prey, facing off against a shadowy hacker posing as Oracle, another of Barbara's former identities as criminal organizations ruthlessly target one another in a bloody war. One of the more lethal tools in "Oracle's" arsenal is a team of snake-themed assassins targeting a key witness under the Birds of Prey's protection. Among this gang of killers is Lady Viper. Its a nice callback in an arc which focuses on Barbara and her team confronting the demons of their own pasts. While I doubt that we'll see another nagafication of our heroines any time soon in canon, that doesn't mean we can't have it at all!
The idea behind this one is that Barbara and her team once again confront Lady Viper in their safehouse, but the encounter reawakens the venom within Barbara, transforming the Batgirl of Burnside into a lamia!
You can see my original drawing here: and you can read the original Lady Viper run in Detective Comics #514-517, and her latest appearance in Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #1-4 (and hopefully beyond?)
All these characters belong to DC comics. Be sure to pick up a copy of the latest run to show your support!
