This was a bit of random sketchy nonsense done while hanging out with
sciencefox and
swiftcutter I've got no explanation for these characters other than they just spontaneously appear when I'm goofing with these two guys. Maybe I should do a character adopt sometime....

...I honestly have no idea how to answer that. I've never looked closely to the adoptable categories before and so I don't know what people expect. All I know is having a vague sense of curiosity and puzzlement about it because from my perspective it goes against what I know people want, ie: a unique character custom design to their interest. People must find it satisfying, but what sort of value do they place on it that would be both worth my time and not a waste of their money? And what are they actually interested in as an end result? Most of the adoptable stuff I'd seen are just a default character pose that is cleaned up and colored and the offered in a number of different color variations... in contrast most of what I do is attitude specific poses of characters that are uniquely designed and not intended to be colored up in kaleidoscope permutations.
If there's legitimate interest though, I should give it a look...

Well for me, adoptables have always been one of two things.
1, like a comission that you dont know you want, until you see it. Surely you've seen a char somewhere and thought "I wish I'd come up with that" ? adoptables are kinda like that. The artist comes up with a charactor, puts them in a situation that may suggest something about their personality, and its sure to appeal to someone that'll want to own the char. This can often lead to follow-up comissions, after all, clearly the adoptive owner likes your style.
Or
2. And I aknowledge this will seem even stranger to someone new to adoptables...
I like adoptables to be a surprise. Ever seen the egg adoptables? Just a vauge idea of perhaps, a color scheme, or some feature the end result will have like... oh... say an egg with antlers on it. Now, could that hatch to be a deer? a Moose? I'll buy it and see. Oh! Jackalope! Thats a nice surprise ^_^
In both cases, you get a unique piece that comes from the artist's mind. In the former, they're sure to like the result as they've already seen it, while the latter is for the kind of people that buy blind-bags, or Kinder Surprise eggs, they like not knowing what its going to be and enjoy the surprise when they finally see it.
The only thing to note about egg adoptables, is that the buyer should have a rough idea of the quality of the adoptable. Would it be a $5 sketch say, or a $25 lineart quality? Would it be colored or left as lineart? There is plenty of wiggle-room with eggs for the artist to find what they're comfortable with.
Something else to think about, this is a good way to put those old one-time charactors to use. You know, the ones that've fallen down the back of the desk, or that you find in a book you havent read in years, temping as bookmark ;)
All artists have 'em, I know I do, and I'm barely an artist ^_^'
I've taken quite a fancy to the vixen on the left above, shes got something of an 80s vibe to her that I like with the oversized earring and the headband&bangles, and her somewhat angular look. Thats enough to pique my interest in adopting the char.
This image has 25 favorites as I'm writing this, so I'm betting I'm not alone in saying I'd like to buy one of the chars in it!
Also, that top ferret? Seriously needs to be a plushie.
