I think Dragon Warrior Monsters II was the first game in the series I've ever played, though I didn't play much of it. Then I played some of Dragon Quest VIII, but Dragon Quest IX is the first one I've played to completion.
Either way, a great series!
And yes, the Dragon Warrior Monsters II games had two versions much like Pokémon, but I think they dropped that in the next game.

I do love Dragon Quest but it wasn't until recently that I've really devoted myself to playing a lot of the series. If you ever wanted to try to get into the series again, I recommend getting Dragon Quest VII for the 3DS or trying to get the remake of Dragon Quest IV for the DS (Or just get the mobile version).

I think what I love about Dragon Quest is, relevantly enough, all the fat monsters in the game. I almost buy these just to fight bosses like Balzaak and Don Mole because there's something satisfying about beating them up. Yet it's just as satisfying soaking up damage with them, which is why I wish I could play Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 since it has one of my absolute favorite Dragon Monsters as a playable: Tuskateer. If I can ever get the game and that English patch I've been hearing about, I'm definitely going to use one as a main, even if he's not that good competitively.
I don't know if there's a rule against posting transation patches, but I don't see why SquareEnix would mind. It wouldn't lose them business. Heck, it'd arguably GAIN them business, because people from the US would be buying the game and it's boost their sales.

I really wish that the new Dragon Quest Monsters game that they are planning wasn't in development hell right now. Honestly, if they just ported Dragon Quest monster Joker 3 or the Dragon Quest monster 1 and 2 remakes to Modern consoles, pretty The graphics up, released them in English and called it a day, I don't think anyone would complain about it.
