Zerans are an alien species that resemble horned cats with lion-like tails. (Artist's note: The species is inspired by an old legend during WWII)
They are normally not space dwellers... they have WWII era technology and galactic law forbids space travelling species from interacting with the homeworlds of species who are not.
However, there is one individual who happens to live among the stars with the space dwelling species. There is a whole story behind it that I'd eventually like to get into. :)
She works as a privateer for the Alliance.

I can see how that would work - someone has to touch down for emergency repairs, a native investigates... they can't let her go back with too much knowledge or it breaks the rules. But if the only one who's seen them is willing to go into permanent exile to see the universe, why not? I'd jump on it in a half a heartbeat if I got that offer.
