Eclectic approached me at MFM 2016 and asked me to do a very iconic scene from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" with his 2 characters "Grant" and "Mary" I'm sure you can find this image online.. to me this might be one of my best pieces. I feel I matched the original identically and raised the definition of that frame.
It would have been easy to do this piece with half the work, and got the same idea across, but it wouldn't have been what the customer really had in mind.. I'm sure he was just expecting some colored line art, vs a 1:1 reproduction of the movie frame.
I finally found a HD copy of this frame in it's 29:1 format on Reddit and then started picking it apart trying to match the cars, trying to figure out what was in the back ground. I never saw the movie, so initially I didn't understand why she wasn't holding onto his chest pulling him close or why there was an awkward space between them.. Once I got the HD frame I found out she was holding a cat.. at that point I had already done my inks and the cat had to go. Also in the original frame I believe there is a 3rd vehicle behind the 40's ford coupe, i believe to be a Ford or Chevy step-side pickup.. but you'd never see it, unless you were forensically picking apart the frame like I was, and once the bokeh depth of field blur was applied you'd also have to really look to find it.. so I didn't put it in..
The rain was fun, full volumetric depth of field rain.. just had a good time figuring out lens and lighting position choices. I ultimately decided not to add film grain, or dust.. I wanted it to stay clean.
I am absolutely happy with the result. it was extremely technical, and challenging.
