We've been using 'they' like this for quite a while now--the Oxford English Dictionary notes that "the word they (with its counterparts them, their, and themselves) as a singular pronoun to refer to a person of unspecified gender has been used since at least the 16th century"
So cut it out. You might just be attempting some kind of language snark, but it's A.) a grammatically invalid gripe and B.) disrespectful.
