...Shit I actually did sound like a Discord shill. :v
I just switched about a few months ago, and now I see everyone else switching to it. A lot of people use skype but a lot of people I know are switching to Discord because Skype is being an over-loading piece of shite.
I do the same on Discord. You can upload images and gifs and whatnot.

I was voicing my frustrations about this to a friend of mine the other day; not just about Telegram either.
At first it was MSN, or AIM, or whatever else. Then as cell phones grew popular we've got so many apps; WhatsApp, Kik, Telegram, but I was happy to stick around on Skype.
Now I'm mandated to have like a million different apps and IM clients to keep up with friends who keep jumping on the new hottest bandwagon.

Aye. I have friends who are like 'Oh well you can find me on Telegram, you should message me there' and it's essentially them saying they're happy to abandon our friendship unless I follow them to the newest shiniest platform because they're never gonna use Skype again of something.
I'll copy and paste what
startide commented first.
"Telegram has this annoying "feature" in that when you first sign up with your phone number, it then broadcasts to literally everyone who both has your phone number in their phone's contacts, and also have telegram, and messages them that you just joined "
When I first started it the damn thing did this and I was being messaged by a dozen or so people. Unfortunately I wasn't providing NAMES to these people, and no contacts list information so that I couldn't message anyone back after someone else messaged. I kept trying to tell everyone this and ask for some help but because of some of them ignoring what I was saying I kept losing those that were trying to provide assistance.
This was because of a large number of people being too damn dense to actually read what I was saying. So they kept messaging me like I wasn't having a problem even though I had just told them I was. I have zero patience for stupidity and it was immediately apparent that telegram was providing me with a massive dose of it. Hence why I've removed it from my computer.
May it rot in digital hell for the shit it pulled on me.

yeah.. and that made me totally flip out when I finally gave in to my friends nagging me to try out Telegram.
There are quite a few people around that have my phone number (telemarketers, exes, (former) coworkers etc) that I did absolutely NOT want to know that I've moved on to a new messenger.. so thanks for ruining that for me, Telegram.
It still doesn't support basic chat features like "/me" that have been around since old IRC times, but at least you can spam channels with stickers and gifs to waste people's mobile data budget.

I find it much better than Skype for one on one chats though on my phone, since skype was sluggish and drained my battery like crazy. I don't mind the sticker spam since I often join in though. Have like several thousand stickers, mostly naughty XD Depends on the group though.
As for data usage, you should really avoid large groups if you don't have unlimited data. Telegram is extremely data-hungry
