Age: 48
Gender: Female
Height: 5'0"
Weight: A lady never tells.
Species: Swift fox
Physical Description: Deirdre is a fairly standard swift fox with sandy colored fur, pale blue eyes and a multitude of scars from her years as a soldier. Her most notable features are her hair, which is chopped raggedly short with a dagger, and the sharp fangs that show when she smiles.
Biographical Data:
Deirdre is the younger daughter of Emer and Feargus Lohan, a pair of wandering tinkers and immigrants to the island of Viridis. She and her elder sister Maura grew up wandering the roads of Viridis, until Maura was crippled when bandits attacked their wagon and flipped the wagon over with the girls still in it, pinning Maura and paralyzing her from the waist down. Deirdre was only eight years old at the time, but she fought off the two closest bandits by herself and guarded her sister until her parents were able to rescue her and take them both to the nearby city of Oseille for what medical treatment was available.
After the attack, her family settled in a modest house some miles outside of Oseille, though her parents continued to travel and often left Deirdre alone to look after her sister. As much as she loved her family, Deirdre wanted something more in her life and, at the age of 13 she ran away to join the army of Cearnach, the city of foxes, simply for the excitement her new career promised. She proved to be a surprisingly competent soldier and was promoted to the rank of Captain in almost no time at all.
It was around this time that Deirdre became involved in an affair with Connor, the king of Cearnach. At first the two of them did their best to keep their romance a secret, but the truth came out shortly after their daughter Ciara was born. To their unending surprise, their fellow foxes were mostly supportive of their relationship in spite of the fact that Deirdre was not only of common stock but an outsider as well. Unfortunately, Connor was contractually betrothed to someone else due to an arrangement made by his parents before he was born, which he could not break without abdicating. So their relationship ended after only a few years, though they remained close friends and Deirdre served as Connor's General until the end of a disastrous war in 1325.
She spent the next several years wandering aimlessly and seeking out employment here and there as a mercenary. She was never happy however, and she never stayed long in any one place. She dislikes talking about this period of her life as she lost contact with both Connor and Ciara and on the whole she feels guilty for whoring her skills out to anyone who would pay her. Perhaps her lowest point was when she ended up fighting against Connor's foxes and the very soldiers she had once helped to train. This made her re-evaluate her life and, in the end, to retire from her lifelong career as a soldier.
Since then she has been reunited with her daughter and has settled in Oseille under the pretense of keeping an eye on Ciara and Ciara's wife Niamh. To her surprise, she finds heading up the Oseille Militia and training the few eager young rabbits under her command to be rather satisfying and it means she gets to sleep in a real bed for the first time in almost two decades.

You want me to do what? Introduce myself? I hardly think that's necessary, is it? The only people who are going to care know who I am already. Well, okay, if you insist, but I've never been much good with words. Or making friends.
I am Deirdre Lohan, former General of the Kingdom of Cearnach, ex-mercenary, ex-soldier by now, at least officially. Just because my daughter is the queen of Cearnach now, she thinks she can tell me what to do. But what she doesn't know won't hurt her. So. I guess what I'm most famous for is being the first common female to ever make it above the rank of Captain in the Cearnach Army, all the others before me being royalty, and for sleeping with King Connor and bearing him a daughter. There are those who whisper behind my back that the only reason I was promoted was because of that, but what do they know? I'd have loved Connor no matter if he was a king or a stable boy. I also trained most of the officers who run the army in Cearnach today, though there aren't many who will acknowledge it. That's the thanks you get for losing a war, no matter how much good you did besides.
Yes, well, you're not here for a history lesson are you? These days, I mostly find my own amusements. I suppose there are a few perks to being retired after all. I do sometimes help train the fledgling Oseille militia, when asked. You'd never believe that rabbits could fight until you see it. Ciara keeps trying to convince me to do more diplomatic work, too. I don't like it much, but she says she needs someone who knows how to cut through all the nonsense and prevarication, and it is funny to see people jump when I come into the room.

You know, Deirdre really strikes me as one of those characters that adds realism to your work. She's one of those people that's caught in the middle of a lot of things and is a victim of her life's circumstances, but she tries so hard to get back with Ciara even though her daughter doesn't make it easy for her. Of course, that's real life. ;)
I'm definitely enjoying the way she factors into Oseille and I'm glad she returns for the planned sequel. No doubt Ciara will benefit from her mother's expertise. ;)

Aw, well thank you. Deirdre is one of my characters I've always been the most proud of and I'm really glad you think she works so well. I imagine it would be rather tough to be in her position. She's about as common as they come, having been raised by wandering tinkers who are immigrants to the island, and she only joined the army because she didn't want to be stuck in her parents' shadow all her life. She fell in love with Connor because he was kind to her, and then the next thing she knew she's not only one of Cearnach's best and most influential officers, she's a mother as well and embroiled in situations well beyond her experience. It has been fun exploring how she's coped with everything her life has thrown at her, and maybe especially how she's failed to cope with some of it. She and Ciara have mostly patched up their relationship by this point, but bickering has become such a big part of it that it's practically second nature now. I thin that, secretly, they both know they wouldn't have it any other way.
I'm glad that you like her, and that you're looking forward to seeing how she works in future stories, too!

A little good natured ribbing is always fun, I think that it even was said in the chapter after the wedding that it is sort of family sport with them. :)
I think she's a valuable narrative resource who adds a lot of layers. She's far from perfect, but we don't get to choose our mothers, we just have to do the best we can.
