Lollipops and rainbows everywhere.
I'd mulled about Celestia and Luna's place in the Eldritch Equestria setting for some time, the most obvious choice at first seemed to be that they would have attempted to oppose the tide of alien forces corrupting ponies before presumably succumbing themselves, but that felt to me like it would have just been too easy of an answer. Though their designs are some of the more original I've had, the general concept just being "alien angels", the direction I decided to take for their backstory was based upon a series I came across called Vast in which Celestia and Luna were originally eldritch horrors descended to Equestria from beyond, struggling to retain their ties to the mortal realm.
