A hat on a skeleton is what this is. The original plan for the roof only had a single slope, but after I had it together, it nagged on me about the front angle being susceptible to wind driven rain, so I added on the small overhang. So yes, it looks like an afterthought because it is, but it's a better piece of mind.
Modern buildings, houses and such, are structurally designed to use plywood for adding rigidity to the structure. In other words, without plywood secured to the frame, it can sway back and forth due to lack of bracing. It works, but I've never cared for that. Just as you want a solid foundation on which to build, I want a solid frame before I put on the "skin". As such, the bracing shown solidifies the structure, and the addition of siding only adds to that. When everything is done, it could essentially contest with a rock.
