I never went anywhere with this, but I'd really like to revisit her. I like where she was going.

Well, I really like mythology and heavy metal, so the idea for her kind of sparked from this Eluveitie song (Swiss folk metal band. Think metalcore with bagpipes, mandolin, and a hurdy gurdy.). It's called Epona, and it's about a Helvetian woman praying to Epona, which is the ancient horse/war/a ton of other shit Goddess that a few cultures worshipped at the time, questioning the death of her husband. I think the song sounds really pretty, but I'm also enamoured with Epona as a concept and this dynamic of the grieving woman. Religion and mythology are themes that show up in my little stories a lot. Anywho, so, in the true fashion of total rip-offs I drew this beefed mare lady thinking that maybe she was in a similar position, where her husband had been taken, and she was grieving to Epona or whatever equivalent Goddess of the world she's in (or culture, Epona was pretty widespread as a pagan entity, even eventually adopted by the Romans) and Epona blessed her with the strength to go fight for her husband back, which would happen to be, appropriately so, this work horse form and the strength associated with it, possibly with a variety of other abilities. It also obviously plays on the gender role reversal of the damsel in distress. I like female protagonists a lot for some reason. I figure as a person she's rather level headed and reserved, so something stable, strong, and unrelenting like a work horse is the perfect expression of her personality.
I like this concept, especially the idea of her having a workhorse style of personality and the perserverence and endurance that comes with it, likely shrugging off hardships without slowing down. She also seems to be a well-rounded character already, a strong warrior but not overtly hardcore or bloodthirsty, full of endurance but not grimly stoic, feminine and strong in multiple ways, and on a quest for love but as someone who has experienced a long-term loving relationship.
I'll have to look up this metal band you mentioned, but this came to mind as I read this description. I can imagine this going well with a symphonic/folk metal song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvtT3UyhibQ&index=84
Hope to see more!

Yeah, that herding call is bad-frickin-ass. I envy shrill female voices very much, and that's a very beautiful one right there. :> I do think you're onto something. I like a lot of metal bands with female singers.
But yeah, thanks for being interested in the story and the many compliments! Much appreciated. I probably needed to get that one out of my system. I don't think I ever really told anyone about it.
