This is the final installment of a short series I've been writing in my free time involving my Aspen and
quiet_codes Codex, often referred to as Dex. It's an AU so please be respectful when commenting and if you find any spelling or grammar errors, please note me and I'll fix it!

The two women moved quietly back into the room that grew silent when they opened the door. Dex stood proudly, her chest puffed out as much as she could muster in the restrictive lashings on her vest. She waited for Aspen to sit in her large armchair, watching her carefully as she crossed her ankles and sighed. The gaggle of creatures standing scattered in the room glowered at the young wolf, trying to shame her into ‘her place’ with the other female. In their time together Dex had not known the goat to be anything close to submissive and neither of them was willing to give up all they had worked for at the university just for the impetuousness of these men.
“Gentlemen, if you would be seated please.” The towering figure near the fire requested of his guests, the dark-furred ram demon ran his hands across the mantle, “It appears Professor Browne has something to say.”
The few men who remained after the fiasco with the bear moved to sit or lean nearby, one of them scoffing and retorting how it was impossible she was a real professor. A retort that did not go unnoticed by the lady of the house as her ears twitched angrily. The young wolf stood near the doorway and rested a hand gently on her friend's shoulder reassuringly, her own ears turned out away from the men but still forward enough to show her defiance.
“I do, thank you, Lord Tyrsblut. I understand there has been a bit of confusion as to the reason I accompanied your daughter here tonight as, I’m sure you’re aware, it was a long journey and neither of us wished to be so disrespectful as to decline your invitation. Not only have we both been disrespected repeatedly within these walls, we have both been treated as mere affectionate tokens of your estate rather than guests or family. I am disappointed you would be so rude to your guests, and appalled you have so little desire to know the like of your future daughter-in-law.” She moved to rest her hands on both of Aspen’s shoulders, gently kneading at the tensed muscles therein.
The visible change in the room was both entertaining and frightening as Nex turned and left the room, not returning until all the lords and high gentlemen had left the house. Said men who had been seated leapt to their feet accusing her of lying and other heinous things before turning to the stoic bastion of regality at the fireplace, demanding to know what mockery this was. Two of the still inebriated men left the room in a huff, retrieving their coats and hats and leaving. Their carriages could be heard rattling off down the road after a short time.
Meanwhile, an eruption of sound in the drawing room ushered the two women back out into the halls having been asked in a restrained politeness to return upstairs, but Aspen took in her hand that of her friend, holding the stronger arm close to her chest and moving down a side path towards the garden. They moved in near silence through the hedges until they came at once to the centre of the maze where they sat near a bubbling fountain inlaid in marble. The house and garden were both grandeur in the midst of poverty that struck neither woman as tasteful. The night lingered on a moment while they waited, watching the clouds shift overhead in the night sky.
“That was very brave...” The young goat whispered into her shoulder, leaning her heavy horns on the crux where the clavicle meets the arm. The warmth radiating between them also shared a devilish glee as bright as the blushing cheeks they both sported. “There are other ways to propose, I hope you know, and generally speaking you’d have to ask my father’s permission. I think he would have said no if we’d done that the right way though.”
“For a spur-of-the-moment decision, I doubt either of us will regret it. Your father might, but we won’t.” Dex sighed slightly, debating between kissing her dearest friend or waiting until they were married. She didn’t have a ring to give her, nor a dowry, no titles, no lands, no status. Her parents would have been supportive if they were here... Another journey they would have to embark upon after this one settled down.
“At least this way he won’t get angry when he dies without grandchildren.” They shared a soft chuckle in the darkness before going quiet again.
The next morning was painfully bright, the clouds from the night before were gone and even at sunrise the mists on the pavement was clearing fast. They had agreed to wait the night before heading back to the school at the behest of the only one who seemed willing to speak plainly about the whole ordeal.
“I am sorry our father has treated you both this way, and that he won’t be down for breakfast or to see you off. I have no doubt he is writing to the school with venomous words. You had best be careful on the trek back, little sister.” Nex was nearly as intimidating when kind as otherwise, but his words were soft. His eyes were blackened and bruising even under the dark fur that ran in their lineage, his lip was swollen and cut as were his knuckles though he wore these with pride.
“Thank you, big brother. We will be.” The three sat at a smaller table than the night before, the large windows giving a much desired change to the coffin-esque lingering the haunted them all the night before. Their breakfast was jovial and lengthy, both women glad to be laughing and free of the rigorous ‘civility’ of the night before. “Thank you for your concern. I must say, it was a treat to see Lord Harrilton be beaten so by the Duke. I suspect their sisters will have something to say about it.”
“I should think so given we have already received a missive from the Lady Charlotte that Lord Harrilton will not be attending any more of our functions for the remainder of the year.” They all smiled and laughed at the misfortune of the otter, interrupted only by the ringing of the front door bell. A drunken bear staggered into the dining area where they waited, the butler jogging behind him trying to stop the procession.
“Sir, please! This is ve-!”
“Oh shut it you twit! You!” The Duke pointed roughly towards Codex, waving slightly from side to side. “You foul wench! You cockroach! You slut! How dare you claim this woman as your own! How dare you foul this place with your deviancy!”
Each insult brought the lumbering beast closer to her though now she stood nearer to Aspen in a protective act that seemed instinctual. The words spewed from his maw like slobbering hate, wax melting from a candle thrown into a fireplace. Shrieking at the women, he raised a great paw and moved to strike, though his hand was caught by the wrist and twisted backwards until a sickening crunch was heard throughout the entire hall. A moment passed before the damage registered and released a howl of pain that echoed against the floors and ceilings across the manor.
“You will not speak in such a way to my family, Duke Lethart, nor dare to raise a hand against them. Leave. At once.” The blazing red and gold eyes that bared down on the old and in pain man seemed to frighten and abhore him causing him to run from their presence cradling his broken wrist. Lord Tyrsblut turned slowly towards his children and Dex, the disdain in his voice broken by the look of protective comfort in his face. “Your carriage awaits. Your luggage is already being loaded and there is food being packed for the trip.”
Dex stood watching in awe as the great lord took his daughter in a tight hug, startled slightly by their parting ritual of gently butting horns but more so by the large hand extended towards her after releasing his offspring. Aspen and Nex exchanged a glance before watching the farewell, the young wolf gripping his hand firmly and with respect.
“I hope the next time we meet, I will have reason to be more... Well, let us meet again, Professor Browne.”
“Indeed, my lord. Until next time. It has been a... Pleasure meeting you, sir.” The word choice made him smirk, the change in his maw as it wrinkled was almost enough to turn her stomach.
Before they left, Nex gave word to the driver to take them by a shop where he said something was waiting for the two ladies. The driver did as told, a young keeper delivering the small parcel to the carriage before allowing them to drive off away from the city and back towards their home. They waited to open the package until the looming towers and lengthy walls of the school were in sight. Inside were two silver rings, one for each of them, one inlaid with garnets, the other melded with a gold band that twirled around the silver. Both were beautiful and practical for them both.
Dex smiled to her now fiance and moved to put the red and silver ring on the delicate finger before allowing her to do the same. Looking up from their hands, their lips met for a moment accidentally and held there by surprise. They both blushed vibrantly and beamed when they disconnected, the carriage driver commenting on how smart a match they were.
