Its a neck piece made out of a piece of heavy copper wire that I cold forged (beat on) flat and into the shape I wanted. The center piece has a stone bezel set in it. I also cold forged the center piece into shape. The bezel itself is a piece of very fine copper sheet. Its secured in place with two silver rivets. The over all color was achieved using heat. It took me ages to get it to the color I wanted. I had to bring a big bowl into class with me because I could not quench this thing properly in the little dishes of water that are kept on the work benches in my class.

Thank you. I made it in a pretty primitive fashion (beating metal into form). I am thinking of doing another piece like this, assuming I can come up with another project appropriate to this method of making things. Ideas always welcome. I am thinking of doing a headband during my next jewelry class, which will be casting but I should have time to do another beaten metal piece or two.
More like simple plates in a similar design, linked together with heavy copper jump-rings. Or try flat strips of copper in place of the jump-rings that fit through holes on the pieces so they lay flat without pressing hard surfaces into your skin while wearing them. Big arm-bands sound awesome...
Hmmm....the idea of the flat strips holding things together sounds interesting. Maybe using rivets to hold them together. I am not sure about the jump rings, its hard to find them in copper and I am none too keen on making my own. Not a bad idea though, will see what sort of copper wire I can scare up. (I might as well have a copper mine under my bed for the amount of scrap I keep)
I will have to see what I can do between the various projects for my next class, which is a casting class. I think there should be a good chunk of down time, since molten metal can take lots of time to cool.

Take a look at your local community college or art museum, maybe they have classes. And I so want to try those metal clays, I just haven't had a chance. I hope you will tell me how results of your working with them comes out.
I will post the results of the casting class as I go. So far I have had two classes and its a lot of carving wax for a project I would rather skip but its good for learning. I am hoping to get to cast a hilt for a dagger I am making (cold forging the blade from some sheet I bought). Probably will be casting most everything in copper, its cheaper and I think its prettier. The torch we get to use for heating the metal is nearly a foot and a half long and sounds like a jet engine. Its a little intimidating. We should start actually casting things in the next class or two (next weekend). I will post the results as soon as they are presentable (its cast then polish). Our casting equipment is in the copper lab (as its called) so I also got to grab some copper scrap for my hammered wrist cuffs and headband. I also have a stone for the headband.

Oh, I know I can just check out the colleges- what stops me is lack of funds.
I'll certainly post pix of my silver-clay efforts, assuming I don't mess it up. Heh.
Yeah, the bigger torches can be scary- I remember having to handle the oxy/acetyline torches in school when I was in the metal shop in high-school. you want a really intimidating torch? Try palyihng with an arc-welder. 20,000 volts of power firing through that thing- we used it to bond heavy sheets of steel together: ZZZZAAAP! melted metal. Not something anyone would use for jewelry, but it was realy cool. The metals class was for industrial welding and maybe sculpture, but the equipment was too brutish for making jewelry. My high-school didn't have anything like that.
Kudos on getting more materials! Is the stone you got similar to the one in the necklace?

Can't wait to see your efforts with the silver clay. I hear its fairly easy to work with if you have worked with clay before. Take that with a grain of salt though, it was from an instructor.
I have seen some of the industrial equipment the college has. Its impressive if not a touch intimidating. The plasma cutter has to the coolest and scariest piece they have, its a 20,000 degree F cutting torch. I want to see if they have a pipe bending machine (I can't remember for the life of me) if they do, I can make one of those very classic Anime priest sticks that have the rings and make noise out of copper pipe. That will bring cringes at the next Anime convention, since it breaks nearly all the weapons rules but do I care...not any more. (A very long story)
I need to take a welding or blacksmithing coarse one of these days, learn to work metals that I already know something about, unlike in jewelry where I still aren't sure of all the things silver can do. (and all the things that can go wrong)
The stone I got is a black stone, some sort of opal I think. Its not like the one in the necklace, I don't think I can find another one like that in the right shape. The last major event here where I could get stone, a gem and mineral show (lots of fun but too many people), wasn't very helpful. Couldn't even scare up the Howlite I needed and that stones common. The one in my necklace isn't near as common but in my latest class, there is someone who cuts stones so maybe she can help me.
