Faction & Division: ONI Section 1, Signal Corps
Rank: Civilian Contractor - Masters degree in Linguists and honorary Doctorate, from ONI, in Xeno-Linguistics.
Name: Christopher John Hyde (CJ) - Agent Hyde - Doctor Hyde; He is aware of the story and had to deal with that joke his whole life and even more so from his colleges after he was given his Doctorate. (Also tis my real name.)
Race: Human, Caucasian of British heritage
Age: 33
Height: 6' 1''
Weight: 182 pounds
Appearance:
*See the numerous pictures I have of myself around the site as well as my avatar - mostly the same appearance with glasses and beard, the hair would just be a lot shorter so it wouldn't be as crazy*
While in possession of the normal ONI uniform, field armor, and dress uniform Chris doesn't often wear those if he can. Because of the nature of his job he often has to go to smaller civilian listening posts that were untouched during the battle or just lightly assaulted and go over whatever recordings they scavenged from the battle. While doing this its often with civilian repair men or Marines accompanying him - and he quickly learnt that showing up in the black uniform with prominent ONI eyes looking at you from the shoulder did not put anyone at ease and just made the operation take longer. This was especially true even when it was just Marines or ODST's because neither had any kind of love for the big mysterious ONI.
So because of all that he often just wears civilian clothes unless he's dealing with just other ONI members, his superiors, or had to wear the field armor for a particularly dangerous mission. Generally going with comfortable shirts and jeans with jackets and good walking boots in case the ground has spiky or sharp objects on it. He is however not ignorant enough to not always be armed doing the dangerous job he does and often has a backpack with his notes on language, known Covenant higher ups, and some ammo in it strapped to his back when in the field.
His pockets, regardless of what he's wearing, often contain pencils and he always has at least one note pad on him.
Strengths:
- Can speak Sangheili fluently and although he doesn't know it he has a strong Muram Keep accent as a soldier of that Keep was the main subject ONI extracted the language from. Although he's never had a peaceful normal talk with a Sangheili he has so far been able to decipher every radio message and distant shout to help plan the UNSC movements to counter the Covenants pushes. When Sangheili are captured he sometimes stays outside the room just listening to lul the alien into a false sense of security since ONI's current translator programs aren't 100% reliable right now, and they have gotten some very interesting information this way.
- Can understand the majority of the Covenant host races language at least to some degree - Kig-Yar, Unggoy, and Jiralhanae he can mostly understand but not fully speak, though he is working on that. This is fortunate that for the most part he just listens to reports made by these species to their Sangheili superiors so its easy to pick out the more common words that would be mentioned in a report. But if for some reason he was out behind enemy lines and for example two Kig-Yar were just talking about life and their home planet he wouldn't be able to understand most of it - especially since he wouldn't be able to play it back until later.
- As he went so far in academia he has a very solid work ethic and doesn't get easily distracted when he's doing his work. It helps that he often has headphones on and is listening to reports so he doesn't often hear distractions and noises while he transcribes the recording. But even when he's out in the field and at a listening post it takes a bit to make him loose focus on the piece of information he is listening to. In a lesser extend this means he also puts the job first and gets it down as quick as possible and efficiently, pulling all nighters when needed and surviving on snack foods while he does.
Weaknesses:
- Being ONI and having the skills he has he is often called in to deal with Covenant prisoners, and because he can often understand perfectly that they are praying for mercy, scared for their lives, and have given up some good info but it was all they had he sees them almost as Human. Because of this he has a lot of pity and mercy buried deep down inside that isn't generally a good thing for a ONI interrogator to have. He often tries to spare their lives and just get them locked up or kept under observation.
- Hasn't the slightest grasp on the Yanme'e or Huragok language(s), though he did have a Deaf friend when he was growing up so is interested to learn Huragok Sign Language but never has a specimen to try and learn from. As for the Yanme'e he physically can't contort his speech tools enough to make the needed noises, so leaves that one alone and instead hopes the Bugs understand Sangheili if he ever has to try and communicate with them.
- Doesn't trust computers and especially computer translators. Some of the members of his graduating class he knows work on them, and they weren't the best students or people he trusted. To his mind they often completely miss the more subtle parts of speech, inflection and tone being just two of them. This paranoia extends to most things computer and electronic as well, one of the reasons he always uses paper and pencil and prefers to do the questioning or decoding of Covenant and their messages the old fashioned way of in person.
Other tidbits;
* Although he wears glasses he doesn't need them to do his work as everything around ten feet or closer he can see just fine, he just needs his glasses to see things further away.
* In the very scant free time he has he tries to dabble in poetry, but he never lets anyone read that section of his notebooks.
* Unlike many ONI personnel he is at ease while dealing with Spartans and actually looks forward to talking with Gold Team when he gets the chance.
* Has a decent enough grasp on firearms and fighting to not be a liability, but only just.
Biography:
CJ was born on Earth in the bustling capital of London - where he only stayed for two years before his parents moved to Sydney Australia for a better job. Both of his parents worked in the communication industry and a new factory for the company they worked for opened there - so they needed some managers to oversee the plants early years. They moved into a small suburb just outside the city limits and settled down to enjoy this new country.
Both of his parents were decently wealthy from their work but didn't want their child to become a slave to the info screens and galactic net so they tried to encourage him as he grew up to go outside and talk to people in person. Due to their wealth however he rarely got sick and ate well, just didn't have many of the new electronic toys that other wealthy kids may be showered with.
The Neighborhood where he grew up had kids from all over the world living in it - and because he had very few electronic distractions he would often spend his days with these other children just listening to their native languages and asking them what it all meant.
When he finally started public school it was the same fascination as interpreters were sometimes needed for new students and he got to spend the entire class session just listening to what math or stories sounded like in Italian, or French, or Spanish. It was during his fifth grade year though that he saw a completely new kind of language that he had never seen before. The interpreter never spoke a word, just made fast and sweeping gestures with her hands to the two young boys before they replied to her and the lesson continued. During the passing time he asked the interpreter about this phenomena and was told it was Sign Language. He was even given a first year book by her which he read in his spare time. Over the summer between his switch to elementary and middle school he learned most of what was in that book - though now he only remembers the alphabet and a few sets of numbers of ASL.
When starting middle school he heard the first mention of the war from a parent who was coming to pick up his child, saying that mommy had left to go and fight the bad creatures. This intrigued the young student and he tried to search up what these things were on the family computer. He found nearly nothing, but didn't let that discourage him as he kept trying and over the course of several afternoons at the computer he learned that Aliens were fighting, but we're being driven back by the Righteous Human Military. The days of access didn't go unnoticed however as his future employer ONI, who had one of their main bases in Sydney, marked his file for future reference. It was all he could find however, and he was disappointed in the computer for letting him down - this coupled with the fact that he didn't have much electronics as a child made him start to distrust machines - his parents were worried about the information their son was trying to find out but after those few days of searching he didn't search for it again so they just forgot about it.
The seed was sewn however as in the back of his mind he always thought about the possibility of Aliens and their own languages and cultures, but never got another taste of them until he was in University.
He focused mostly on English and the Humanities in high school, but kept decent grades in math and science to be one of the schools top students. During one of the high schools career fairs when he was a Junior he was told about one of the local University's in town, Wheatly (The same one Evan Phillips will go to) and its very good Linguist program. Recalling his early days as a kid in his old Neighborhood he applied to Wheatly as one of his choices when we was a Senior in High School. Behind the scenes ONI had already accepted his application before the University had seen it, and he was on his way to Wheatly much to his parents delight.
Soon after arriving he applied for the Linguistic track and was quickly accepted to that as well due to his good grades in similar classes in high school and began the tougher college level course to become a certificated Linguist. During his first three years in the program more and more info about the war started to seep in. But rather than be repulsed by it or scared Chris tried once more to dig deeper and finally found images of what the Aliens looked like. Their skulls very much interested as he tried to compare palates, dentals, and labial systems to try and guess at what a language created for those shapes and sizes of speech tools would look like. ONI was now obviously watching him very closely as he moved into his senior year and was placed into the Honors class with the best students Wheatly had - and it was here where ONI started its elaborate plan.
The class was told by their professors that a fringe language had been discovered being spoken by Humans who's vessel had crashed decades ago - the class would be given all the data currently acquired on this language and were tasked to set up a Cipher and Lexicon for it. Unbeknownst to the class ONI had set them to task of seeing if Humans could learn an Alien Language, specifically Sangheili.
Chris began the term working with Kelvin Winn, another skilled Linguist - but he always wanted to run what they had through a computer rather than just doing it on paper like Chris wanted - and before the first quarter had finished they had been moved to different groups to stop the arguments.
As the language started to become more and more refined Chris started to have questions as to if a Human would develop something like this; a language that required so much dental and labial manipulation with almost no palatal movement...almost as if the tongue was too short and there were additional teeth. After hours he often conferred with his class mates about this but none of them really sought out answers as they were so close and didn't want to fail their senior project.
The cipher was successfully completed, with most of the students gaining a firm understanding of this mystery language. On the final day of class the three black uniformed people, two male and one female, enter their classroom to speak with them all after locked the doors. It was now that it was revealed that the language they had been working on had been Sangheili and they well done all around. They may have had concerns about getting a job with a Linguist's set of skills but one had just walked in the door for them - to work at the bogymen filled ONI.
Even if class mates had concerns about working for them all accepted, though not all forty class mates still work for the 'Office'. All of the graduating students telling their parents they had gotten a very well paying 'Office' job off world and wouldn't be seeing them much anymore, but would send back money and occasionally host video calls. Chris's parents couldn't be prouder that he had got such a successful job doing what he loved, they just didn't need to know the details and continued on with their lives.
The ONI training and screening, as mentioned, weaned out the students with sub par skills or weaker stomachs, but of the original forty thirty one remaining employed. By the time the successful ones were told how many had made it they all knew better than to ask what had happened to them.
Despite their stellar work with the language all of them started fairly low down the totem pole of ONI, and this annoyed Chris a little that enough though he was finally part of ONI he was still unable to get any more information about the Alien whose language he now knew. To achieve this goal he luckily found fellow Agent Mike Moretti, who was kind enough to do some basic bypassing to allow Chris to view the information he wanted. The two men have worked together a few times throughout the course of their ONI careers and have become good friends.
His ONI superiors didn't like him snooping around, with assistance, and bumped him down a few pay grades so he wouldn't keep mucking about. Reduced to simple message deciphering Chris knew enough about ONI to know he was lucky to not be killed and so stayed in his new position and kept quiet for a year and a half. During this quiet time he started to learn about the other Covenant languages and got a basic understanding of most of them.
He finally regained enough trust to be moved up to a real position, after one of his classmates had been killed by a Covenant mine, to get their position and now had a much more active role in ONI. Now occasionally he would go out into the field to do real time translating of Covenant messages to tell the Marine and ODST officers where the Covenant would be. This new life was much loved by Chris as he occasionally got a good look at the Covenant, mostly when dead, and even started to be called in to deal with prisoners to extract information.
This new calling was the first time he was really unsure about his career choice; here he was, trying to have a conversation with a Unggoy who was cowering in the security tent, begging and pleading to not be killed, and screaming out when the Marine Sergeant kicked and beat the creature until it finally said what it can. Before he was even able to suggest keeping it prisoner the other man gripped its mask and the back of its head and snapped its neck, spitting on the corpse before storming out of the tent, shoving past Chris as he did.
It took Chris awhile, but he finally squared his consceince enough to continue his new main job, it helping that he saved a few Kig-Yar and Unggoy from being executed.
During his new job he was introduced to the team of Spartans Gold, and unlike his ONI fellows who went to meet them he didn't see what was so spooky or mysterious about them. They could kill you in an instant sure but so could nearly all the Marines and ODST. They were bigger than you but so what? They were still Human and just very well trained to do their job. He hit it off better than most with them and works with them fairly regularly now to give them information on Zealot movements and to go over their mission reports. Not only that but they are often nice enough to bring him back 'presents' be that Covenant tech, messages, data from computers, and even Covenant sometimes.
This brings his time to now, a ONI interrogator and Xeno-Linguist who had a few friends and enemies in ONI as well as being on decent terms with Spartans - his parents would sure be proud if they knew he was doing anything of the sort rather than punching numbers into a computer for staggeringly high pay for such a 'low' job.
NPCs: Graduating Class members that now work with ONI and Chris interacts with semi regularly;
* Main Rival; Kelvin Winn(Male) - Works as a prominent programmer of Translation Software. During the time while they were in the same class both of them started the term working together, but rifts began to form as they both kept thinking they were correct and the other would never relent. So they joined different groups and stayed apart. The rifts between them have never been repaired, ONI not helping as they told both men that the other had done more for the project so they are still in a constant competition to outdo the other. While not often in the interrogation room Kelvin occasionally partakes in them himself, eager to get whatever information available from it to incorporate it into his machines.
* College; Dalit Matz(Female) - A fellow linguist who unlike Hyde despises the Covenant and everything they stand for. Rather than calling for just a talk to get information then letting the subject live for another session or until a plan for them can be formulated Matz loves to slowly torture the information out of the prisoners to a degree that often really worries Hyde about her mental health. When the torture is finished its often a bullet to the brain or a knife to the neck for the captive, before Matz leaves the mess for the other Agents to clean up which often ends up being Hyde so he can give the sentient creature at least some form of a dignified disposal.
* College; Michael Gonzales(Male) - Another fellow linguist who is more along the spectrum of Hyde rather than Dalit. While he is often for letting the prisoner live he likes to instead getting the interrogation done quickly so he can get back to his own projects. To make it go quick he will often use torture, though not to the extent of Dalit, to get what is needed quicker.
RP Sample:
A smorgasbord of emotions played over Chris's face as he read over the transcript again before nodding and setting his pencil down. Gathering up the five pages of handwritten dialogue with some action tags Chris nodded before sliding them into a manila envelope and wrapping the string around the bob at the top - a decidedly old fashioned way of delivering documents but still a effective one.
Giving Sorelson the transcript of the interrogation and execution of the Kig-Yar he had helped - named Bep if the recording of the meeting hadn't been tampered with - would go against nearly everything that ONI had about any kind of information...but the man deserved to know what had befallen the Kig-Yar he captured. It may have been his sentimentalities showing but he wouldn't feel right if at least Sorelson didn't know the alien was dead. But seeing his last words may give him some solace...or make him hate ONI more since he was executed for knowing nothing.
Scratching his beard a little he sighed and nodded, slipping the envelope into his bag he then slid his notepad, pencils, and the reports of the forest mission and interrogation into his bag as well, in a separate pocket so he could easily grab the envelope when he met up with Sorelson, but that wouldn't be for awhile as he stood to exit the room.
He was certain he wouldn't get stopped by his fellows...but it was a possibility as he was essentially giving up classified information. (During the next intermission me and Cabel wanted to RP the meet up and exchange.) Making sure all the pockets in his bag was shut and his magnum was strapped to his thigh CJ keyed the door to his small office open and stepped out into the equally small hallway of the ONI Prowler Passing Thought. Intending to head to the storeroom to get some food he started to head that way, sticking close to the right side of the wall as to not get in the way of traffic. Though when just about the turn the corner an arm for the other side of traffic stuck out in front of him as he looked up to see the smirking face of Kelvin.
"What do you want Kelvin?" CJ mumbled out as he glanced down at Winn's hands to see that he was also carrying a bag, and on seeing two different sized knives sticking out of the bag knew what was coming next. Already starting to turn around to join the other way traffic as Winn happily informed him a Special Operations Sangheili had been horribly wounded but didn't die during a failed operation - Spartan-021 hitting it while it was camouflaged and about to assassinate an officer. Huhing a little in mock interest for Kelvin's sake as he was led along Chris was actually interested - Courtney was a crack shot and even while invisible she would have been able to kill the Sangheili with her rifle...so why was he still alive? A question to pose to Gold Teams marksman later for sure as Kelvin passed his ID card over a door and stepped inside with CJ following after, setting his bag down near the door as he took out his note pad and pencil from his pants pocket.
He noticed that Michael was already there waiting as he looked through the one way window at the Sangheili - ONI interrogations a three man job, one to lead, one to question, and one to break ties should a disagreement come up - the alien warriors armor removed as it sat chained to the chair in its under suit. It looked as if it was heavily sedated, and the large patch of dried purple in its upper left chest was a good indication of where the high powered round had pierced through. It looked as if the shot had missed both its hearts, clearly since it was still alive, but the Sangheili probably lost a lot of blood while it was being detained. Humming some more he nodded to Michael and Kelvin as they nodded to each other - "Let's begin then." They said in unison as they all stepped through the door into the room with the Sangheili; Chris with his note pad and paper, Kelvin with a knife and a lighter, and Michael with a Humbler and a normal poking stick.
Chris stepped forward first, clearing his throat to get the Sangheili's attention, glad to see that it was still moving and not sedated beyond being able to respond.
"Name and Rank?" He started in Sangheili, a good simple question to make sure everything was working alright.
"Zxel 'Tykomee, Special Operations Minor," the Sangheili replied, not moving up its multi hinged head to look at them. Understandable giving their situation they were all meeting in. Hyde waited for the translation software to reply, and it got that right at least, though he smiled a little and glanced at Kelvin before turning back to the Sangheili - what a golden opportunity to make him look like an idiot.
"Explain to me the mission you were sent on, be as detailed as possible if you would." Hyde replied as he took a step back and waited as the Sangheili mumbled out its reply with his head still resting against its chest.
"The Zealot ordered me to seek out a Human officer, we knew he was on the ground from our Kig-Yar snipers - and once he was eliminated the main force would move in, crushing you unholy Nishum before the might of our war machine!" Not really what he asked but Chris waited with baited breath anyway as the Translation was spat out from the machine.
"The holy leader order I to seek a human leader, we know he grounded from bird shoot, once gone big group move, kill rat before holy push!"
The Sangheili twitched in surprise as Chris burst out laughing, eventually able to control himself as he turned to Kelvin and shook his head. "That's the best you have for this!? That wasn't anywhere NEAR what he said, man I'd hate to be a part of your department."
Kelvin was clearly less than pleased that his work was being laughed at as he moved over to the wall to make some adjustments to it. "Go again...it just needs some calibration to this aliens accent."
"Oh I'm sure that's the issue, fine," turning back to the Sangheili as Michael just stood beside it with his Humbler ready. "Alright," he started again in Sangheili. "Explain this Zealot that issued the order, see if he matches with any we know."
The Sangheili looked up at this, eyes full of rage as it strained at the chains, Chris taking a precautionary step back as it spat our a reply, Michael raising the Humbler just in case. "Our Illustrious and blessed Field Master Til, and soon he will butcher you all like the scum you are!" With a roar the chains around the Sangheili's wrists were broken as it surged forward, shouts from all the ONI mixing in with the translator as everything went to hell.
"My great and great plains Master Til, soon he will kill all like trash you is!" While the translation was played out Michael tried to swing the Humbler down, but the flailing chain from the Sangheili's wrist clocked him across the jaw, making him collapse with a scream as the Spec Ops minor turned to the other two Agents, swinging his arms wide to flay both chains in their direction. Kelvin and Hyde both hopped backwards as they dropped their old tools and reached for their sidearms. Kelvin jumped back to far and offed as he hit the fake wall, but Chris was lucky enough to fall backwards while the Sangheili bellowed and moved in for the kill, shouting things about this Til and brutal murder. Just when he finally hit the ground Chris was able to remove his magnum from his holster and fire up at the Sangheili, as fast as he could.
A few shots went wide but enough embedded themselves into the chest of the Sangheili to make him stagger, more purple blood spreading over its under suit as Chris's magnum clicked. Thankfully by how Kelvin was able to add his fire to the assault and the Sangheili slumped backwards against the chair dead, bleeding profusely from the numerous bullet holes. Kelvin moved forward slowly as Chris got to his feed and reloaded, the other man putting a final bullet in between the Sangheili's eyes as Chris quickly moved over to Michael's side and crouched down. He was still alive, that was good, but the broken chain had opened a long gash on his face. Sighing a little Chris quickly called for a medic as he looked to the side at the dead Sangheili and the rest of the room that was covered in red and purple blood - some on all of their bags including his with Bep's interrogation transcript in it. But of course Kelvin had to speak up as he holstered his pistol and smirked.
"My translator caught that, and how's your 'oh lets let them live' mentality now mmmm?"
"Hey Kelvin?"
"What?"
"Fuck off."

NPCs: Graduating Class members that now work with ONI and Chris interacts with semi regularly;

"What?"
"Fuck off."
