So a couple of hours ago I had a couple good friends over for some drinks, and I ended up having one or two more than I should have if I planned to do another self portrait before I went to bed, so I thought I'd just do a quick sumi ink drawing and go to sleep. I did several in about half an hour, but I didn't really like how any of them turned out. I was about to post one of them at like 1:00, but I just thought I'd just do one more and see how it turned out. I'm glad I gave it another shot because I ended up with something I like, so I threw it into photoshop to play around with the levels and tweak things here and there. So overall I'm pretty happy with how this turned out, except for a few little places that I couldn't seem to fix without killing the whole picture. Also, I love all critique, so if you notice anything horrible/bad/good/great about this picture or any of my work then please tell me about it :)

Thankyeh Woogle :D I'm going to see if I can get something going on that Augustus tomorrow too. Also, I have a few older ink drawings that you could use as a reference, but I never uploaded them. I need to head off to bed, but I'll be sure to post them up tomorrow.
And you could still be in the running! Post a 30 second gesture!

Only thing I'd crit depends on whether or not you've got a beard, and if it covers your neck; if yes, then this piece rocks my socks completely. If you've got some skin in that shadow area you could nudge some differentiation in there to separate it from the dark value of the hair. That'd be it, though; your skills are just stunning, mister.
I love how soft the forehead is, but I assume that's from retouching. It lacks the texture of the rest of the image. I guess if you wanted those highlights intact you could play off of the white gaps around the hair, as if the ink itself was fleeing the paper and leaving us with appropriate highlights.
Wait, did that even make sense?

I planned to do that with the ink washes, but the first wash went down too dark and started going where it shouldn't go. I ended up having to go back into PS and clonestamp the white paper texture onto the forehead to bring out the highlights, but it sort of just gave it a blurry digital look. I debated not putting it in there, but I had to have that highlight x_x
So you mean I should make the edges of the highlights around the forehead more harsh like the ones around the nose and the eye? I think I'll try that out tonight when I retouch the neck. Thanks!
