Warning: I had a lot of drama because of a comment in DeviantArt, please, dont do the same.
So... I have tons and TONS of these kind of ..annoying comments. (SPECIALLY in Deviantart) Because yes, we have to admit it, they-are-really-ANNOYING.
You make a character, and you are very happy with your character; "oh yes im very happy with my character! 8D" til someone appears and say "oh! it looks like..." or "oh it reminds me of.." man.. no. please guys... don't EVER tell that to an artist! it's extremly disrespectful! 'but I didn't meant to..' YES, yes we know, we, the artists, know that.. BUT, its disrespectful anyways!
When people tell me "oh, aleki looks like my fursona!" or "he reminds me of *game/show/movie character*" or even Banzai to Lion King characters and bla bla bla, I tell to people "please, stop that", because if I don't do something about it, people will say those damn words again and again and it doesn't makes me feel good, it actually makes me feel SO-BAD, so MAD, and unoriginal... please don't feel offended when I tell you something like "stop that" or "thats not a compliment", I'm NOT trying to be rude (because yes, some people think I'm rude when im telling them to stop) that's NOT my intention either! I'm just telling you to-STOP, because it hurts me, it hurts my feelings, yes.
Some of my watchers know what happened with Aleki the first time I showed him.. right? Remember? the very strong lenguage, the death wishes, ect ect... now, that, is an EXTREME level. after that, I was really afraid of posting stuff about Aleki, even if I changed his clothes.
I know you guys will not say rude stuff about me and yeah, but the quantity of times that people said "Aleki looks like *DBZ character*" was incredibly intimidating; I actually had to disable the comments. (but that didn't stopped the haters, they sent me notes and stuff).
"The problem is that if it does remind someone of a character that already exists, then they aren't the problem. It's your character. " <---- no, no, no, no and no. x1000000000 no. don't say this kind of stuff please, PLEASE, because if you do, then you clearly dont understand. It looks like a joke.
Only myself can say who is my character and how he looks like, not you.
I'm just speaking for all those artists affected by these comments. Please -again- don't feel offended!
it's the truth.
Thank you c:

I know the feeling as well, though it didn't actually happen to an extent that it really bothered me too much for me yet.
Personally I think it wouldn't be too bad, if the commenter had something else to say as well and just... somehow noted some similarities on the side, just to add to their comment. But especially comments that only mention 'this looks like that' always have... some accusatory tone to them, intentional or not and that's what upsets artists most of the time. And otherwise they also don't really seem to be... any kind of actual feedback.
Now, the fact that I don't think people have to be free of inspiration and have to create everything in a vacuum to be creative, is a whole different issue. I think there is nothing wrong with borrowing aspects from popular characters. At the same people have to understand that it's not unlikely that similarities happen unintentionally all the time as well and don't pretend like something that has been done can never be done again without being 'stolen'.
So I really don't get why people got so mad at you, no matter what they thought you did there (and honestly, I thought Egyptian apparel was a common things for cats like these, so I didn't even make any connection there before I read about the drama).
The whole issue you had with Aleki hits close to home for me, because I made myself an Oriental Shorthair character as well, after getting into DBS.

That is some serious shushing. I can understand what you are saying though. At the end of the day it is just respecting others. If you make it known you don't like that, then folks just need to have the decency to respect it. After all, it is your artwork.
Also, common sense should dictate that if comments are disabled you shouldn't note them your comments either.

It sounds like common sense but people don't like the idea of respectfully shutting the fuck up apparently. Their opinions are so incredibly important and insightful that they must be heard regardless of whether or not they are wanted or required in any way, shape, or form.
respect is something that is decidedly lacking in our community and the world in general.

Personally it would not bug me when people would say something like this about my character as long as they do not imply that I have stolen anything like a design. If they say; "Oh cool it reminds me at this character from this show!" I'm okay with it... but when they say shit like "Oh, it looks like the character of this or that artist!" I get angry real fast. I think it is good that you did point out you do not wish to receive any commentary around this at all. It is understandable and should be respected.
Yeah, shit like this just feels degrading and annoying to me. I'm perfectly aware that my characters will look similar to others; I'm not the only person who has a Clydesdale character, or of course a wolf, etc and etc. But that doesn't mean I need to constantly be reminded of that. None of us do, I can tell.
I say that is two characters look alike, just let them be. BUT if the background of both characters are very similar, personality, age, and so on, then I can respect it if someone holds suspicion and curiosity. I don't care how physically alike two characters are, if they both have well developed and different backgrounds, personalities, and such, then they are two original characters. A character having a good design does not automatically make them good. Anyway, I could type on about this for multiple paragraphs but no. Too much. I just hope you get the point.

I hate to say this, but the quality of your art and your status as a more popular artist draws this kind of criticism more often than it would normally receive. Keep that in mind when you get comments like that; people are more than likely saying it to start shit in a way that doesn't immediately paint them as an instigator, when that's exactly what they are. nobody would say shit like that without knowing it could and more than likely will be taken offensively.
I wouldn't worry too much about your actual character. The only resemblance they have to Banzai is that they're both hyenas, which is ridiculous, because no shit a hyena is going to look like a hyena. What makes the characters themselves are completely different. I'm sure there are similar arguments to be made with other comparisons; singular aspects picked out from the rest, which when compared directly are obvious, but when seen as a whole could not be more different.
