#30: Mimikyu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3jBpU2NE_w
Alright, let's get this countdown started off for real... with a Pokemon that hasn't even been in a release title yet..? Yeah, so like nearly everyone I've fallen in love with Mimikyu, probably due to a sever bias because it looks like if someone came to me to design Pikachu which is why I want it in my team; It being Ghost-type is just icing on the cake to me and I've already welcomed it into the Ghost family; of course since it's not even out yet I could rank it much higher then this and honestly, it's what Mimikyu deserves - it's entire reality is yearning for attention and not getting it (which I guess in turn made the internet flock to it)
While I love Mimikyu so far I will admit there's a part of me that realizes it's unfortunately the perfect allegory for the Pokemon series as a whole. A literal ghost of it's former self desperately clinging to fame and an image of days long past, which is uses to lure you in but once you're close enough you realize it's not the same at all. It's worn out and tired and hoping some extra bell or whistle will make you love it again... wow that got deeper then I expected.
Ok, so no offense to anyone who has kept up love for Pokemon generation after generation but for the most part I've pretty much stuck to Gen 1-2. I felt per generation it got weaker and weaker in it's design, that's not to say I haven't liked Pokemon from those later generations but the amount that I enjoyed definitely got fewer and fewer until I basically gave up by Gen 5. (though ironically my favorite Pokemon ironically came from that exact era) Gen 6 was this weird fluke for me that felt classically whole again; like they recaptured the spark and it was back on track. That being said I had high hopes for Sun & Moon... but boy was I wrong. Again, no offense to those who like them, but I feel like a wide majority of the new Pokemon look like utter garbage, hell the garbage Pokemon looks better then some! I don't lie when I say Mimikyu is the only new Pokemon that made me want to keep my preorder for the game so... whatever you're doing right Mimkyu, keep it up. So... yeah there's my soap box for today. Enjoy~

It's funny you feel that way about the designs, considering Ken Sugimori actually went back to a Gen 1 sort of feel for this set. And on the subject of Mimikyu, between its backstory and Nintendo finally knocking it off with their DON'T EVER EVOLVE PIKACHU bullshit, I think maybe they've become very self-aware and decided to kinda take a jab at themselves.
Also, for the record, I still maintain that HeartGold and SoulSilver are the best in the core series, but now ORAS is a serious second-place contender.

Yeah I can agree to all counts, I definitely got that feel from Mimikyu, and more or less I'd agree. In terms of gameplay the games definitely got better, so as far as the remakes of Gens 1 and 2 I love them; there are elements I liked of the later games but the new Pokemon themselves became worse and worse but that's not to say I didn't like some throughout as you'll clearly see in this countdown
In terms of the Pokemon themselves, I think Gens 1 and 2 have the biggest numbers of truly great designs myself, while Gens 3 and 4 were a bit of a step down but at least consistently good and usually interesting. Gen 5 is where I began looking at some of the new designs and going "Okay, SERIOUSLY?" or even outright forgetting certain Pokemon exist. Gen 6 was better, but not quite back to form yet. And with Sun and Moon's lineup... I'm honestly pleasantly surprised, cause I have no complaints about any of the new Pokemon. Some of the regional forms baffle me, and I don't get this alien beast nonsense, but otherwise? Back to the old retro standards, IMO, just as Sugimori wanted.
