Sometimes you draw something and you think "This, THIS could be my breakout piece." Then you remember that nobody gives a shit about rodents and when coupled with your overall mediocrity, you fall back down to Earth and trudge off to work to clean the toilets.

The original framing device for this piece:
"That moment when the arrow pierced the heart of the attacking predator
You would reunite, that sweet boy from across the river once again coming through for you
Two playmates of rivals, chasing and frolicking into late afternoons
Torn away in youth by hostile elders, never to see one another again
Until this fated moment
And what a sight he is, transformed into a destroyer of beasts
As well as an eliminator of your own
A trained warrior, fighting for the protection and prosperity of his own colors
And he is so proud, presenting his weapon for you to examine
To touch and see what he has become
Whether he is still that sweet boy who believed in love across sides
Or a new buck, taught to believe in total conquest, your sweet face the only exception
That remains to be seen
But for all that has changed, so much remains the same
He may be a little bit older, and more than a little bit larger
Even so, it's those eyes, still so preciously jeweled
That smile, still so enchantingly coy
And that fur, still so forbiddenly grey"

My squirrels tend to come in two varieties, depending on how I'm using them. My general purpose squirrels, more often used in my clean work, look smaller and more petite, as you'd expect from a rodent. They might be built to look athletic, but in a more agile way. Then there's the other work, where my bucks might need to be more dominant and physically overwhelming. In that case, they're thicker, more muscular things which retain the appeal of a rugged animal. This guy here is an example of what that tends to look like, though his status of a warrior makes him bigger than usual.
Thanks for the compliment.
