Finally! This red fox skull art piece took me twelve weeks to complete (not counting processing time) but mostly because I kept playing musical chairs when it came to a design.
The idea is based on how often I find bones and skulls that are covered in growing plants or have been turned into a home by bugs, reptiles or even a rare rodent. Death leads to life more often than not, and I wanted to capture that here.
The fox skull is done in foresty greens and sculpted with tree branches and tree leaves (complete with a couple of acorns) and flowering vines. A tiny ladybug perches on one leaf while a wee lizard hides in one orbital socket and mushrooms grow in the other. A spider web stretches between the tree branches while the teeth resemble tree roots; small spikes of quartz crystal replace the front incisors. The spider web was done with a dotting style to kinda look like a web does in the morning, covered in dew. There are shiny clear resin 'dew drops' on some of the leaves, too.
All sculpting is hand done using professional quality polymer clay and the paints are homemade. I may still add a few light real leaf prints behind the branches for a more in-depth look.(That's where I brush a very thin coat of paint on a real leaf and press it to the skull, leaving a faint impression of the leaf.)
There are small surprise glow in the dark effects, too: when the lights go off those wee mushrooms glow a faint green and 'fireflies' appear to have taken flight across the frontals of the skull. :)
The 5 inch skull hangs on a quality copper chain with latch clasp. It'll be sold at the Oct 2nd event (I hope.) Anyone want dibs if it doesn't sell there? USA only.
