Surprisingly not, just a persistent background critter. I don't have many settings where mounts play a role, but when I have one of those stories, the equs are there. Sometimes the things I really like appear as frequent, rather than important, characters.
It's mostly the predatory horse angle that fascinates me. The ultimate docile herbivore (horse) becoming a large, powerful predator (equs).
