Chapter 4: Ad Victoriam
A Lunis Idea
Written by Mecha-MightyenaDOR
Azriel was tempted to let out a sigh, but he thought better of it, much like he thought better of doing anything to his injured leg. Krystal was already stressed out enough as is, her whole body looked on the verge of exploding from how tensed she looked. Not like he could blame her though, the situation was as far from ideal as you could get without losing your clothes and being covered in some substance or another. That had been a terrible weekend.
Not helping matters were that they had been separated from Amaya and patamon, which probably meant they figured Krystal was his partner. Which in all honestly was probably for the best, the renamon hadn’t exactly arrived in the human world legally after all. But he was certain the fox was feeling isolated and alone because of the separation. “Hey, Krystal calm down…it’s alright…this is just standard procedure. They just want to know what happened with that dynohumon.”
She didn’t respond, eyes down cast and ear flat as she stared at the table in front of her, something unsettling in the pit of her stomach. That digimon seemed like he had been targeting her, he had practically ignored everyone else at the park unless they got in the way. But the question was of course, why? What grudge did he have against her? What was worse was if he had in fact been after her, that meant that Azriel and patamon had been put in danger all because of her. This was the second time the human had been put at risk all for her sake, and for all she knew, she had done something to deserve having other digimon after her.
She blinked, suddenly feeling a gentle rub on her shoulder, Azriel giving her a smile, “You worry too much you know that? I blame the clothes, digimon aren’t meant to cover up. Its messing with your head, should definitely get rid of them.”
The renamon smirked, taking his hand off her shoulder, “First, nice try but no. Second, plenty of digimon wear clothes. Third…thank you.”
He chuckled a bit before the door to their room opened, the short haired woman from before looking to the two as she took a seat opposite them. “I’m Lieutenant Carmine, sorry for the wait.” She set down a folder, leaning forward, “I’ve a few questions if you don’t mind.”
“Go ahead and shoot.” Azriel sighed, stretching, “Not much we’ll be able to tell I’m sure. Kinda took us by surprise as much as everyone else.”
“Alright, well for starters where have you two been the last few days.” She interlocked her fingers together, looking Azriel right in the eyes. A fairly bog standard trick for an interview, watching the one you question for any telltale signs, any slight body movement to give away their true intentions.
“Last few days? I’ve mostly stayed home, a few excursions outside for some things here and there. Krystal’s only been here since last night.” He pointed to the renamon, eyebrow raised. This was not the line of questioning he thought they’d be getting after today. Why on earth would they need to know where they’d been prior to the dynohumon’s rampage?
“Last night is when she arrived, hmm? Strange we never registered a digimon arrival at all during that night…” Her eyes narrowed.
Azriel couldn’t pinpoint why, but he didn’t like how these questions were going, “Oh believe me we’re aware, you guys also didn’t notice the giant metal dinosaur that came with her. Damn thing busted my window and tried to eat me. And now today another dinosaur comes up and tries to fillet me. All in all, we’ve been attacked by rouge digimon twice in less than a single day.” He scoffed, “Can’t wait to see what tries to kill me tomorrow. Given the record thus far I’m betting it’s another dinosaur.”
Carmine blinked, taken aback not by his attitude, but by Krystal’s arrival situation. Her eyes went to the renamon, who was sitting meekly, ears down and eyes down cast, “…Krystal was it? Is that true, you came through with another digimon? And this one was hostile?”
“Umm… yes. When I came into this world a Metaltyranomon was also there and we were fighting… I don’t know what about… I can’t really… ummm…” she trailed off, wishing she would just shrink into the corner. The officer’s eyes felt like there were burning a hole right through her being, as if Carmine could find out more about the renamon than she herself could.
Azriel shifted in his seat, giving a worried glance over the vixen before looking back toward the officer, “She’s lost her memory; she took a pretty hard hit that sent her right into my car. I don’t know if digimon can get amnesia from that, but everything about the last 24 hours has been strange so it wouldn’t shock me. We went to a DRT station earlier to try and find out where she came from, figured if we knew where she was from we could trace her steps you know…”
“But they never registered her arrival, so you couldn’t help her…I see.” The DRT officer tapped her chin, opening the folder and looking through some of the papers therein, “So, she arrived yesterday and appeared before you. That would mean Krystal is your digimon partner than Mr.…”
“It’s just Azriel please.” He stretched out, nodding his head, “And yeah she’s mine. Hell of a way to meet one if you ask me, but I’m not really complaining.”
“Hmm, odd you never registered her as such.” Carmine looked to him, studying his facial expression, cause judging from Krystal’s something was up.
“Umm, did you miss the part about her arriving literally last night? Or was it the part of her missing her memory? Sorry, but I kinda figured helping her out was more important.” His tone got a noticeable edge to it, his face growing more stern at the same time.
“And the little field trip to the amusement park was supposed to help her memory…”
The man sat up straight, locking eyes with the officer, “It was to help cheer her up when DRT had no records of her crossing over, meaning we had lost our only real lead that could have let us get back her memory. Look I’m sorry about forgetting to register her, but there’s been kinda a lot of shit going on that seemed a bit more pressing.” Krystal had enough trouble as is, she didn’t need DRT hassling her over red tape, but damn was he pushing his luck. If the officer didn’t back off, he’d probably wind up spending the night in a nice cozy prison cell for being difficult.
Thankfully it seemed to work, Carmine backed down, a feint blush to her cheeks, “Alright, my apologies, just need to be sure of the situation.” She cleared her throat, “Now about the situation that arose at the park… what exactly happened back there?”
“That crazed dynohumon just showed up and started causing havoc, that’s really all I can tell you.” Azriel shrugged, Krystal nodding her head, “Krystal leapt into the fray, angemon backed her up, while they kept the thing busy me and my sister helped people escape while waiting for you guys to show up. And then you did, end of story. As for why he went on his insane rampage, I can’t even begin to fathom, you’d probably have better luck asking the raging psycho himself.”
“Well he’s my next stop, provided he can stop roaring and spewing profanities. Hmm, but I see you left out the whole shooting the rampaging digimon with a game stall crossbow… I’m still not sure if that was really brave or really stupid.” She chuckled lightly.
“Eh, a little from column A and a little from column B I guess.” He shrugged, chuckling, “I had to do something to help though, I’m not really one for standing around with my thumb up my ass waiting for others to save me. Besides, I wasn’t too worried, I’m not dying till after I get laid.” He folded his hands behind his head, leaning back with a smirk on his face.
“How very… charming. It’s a wonder you haven’t gotten laid yet.” Carmine looked over the papers in the folder again, before letting out a small sigh, “Well I had hoped you might have had at least some information on why he attacked. As it stands we don’t even know how he came here or where he’s from.”
She muttered something else, but Azriel quickly held up a hand, eyes narrowed, “Wait, what?”
Carmine sighed, rubbing her face, “It would appear that much like Krystal and the metaltyranomon, it showed up without triggering our sensors. A digital field appeared, he emerged from it and immediately went on a path of destruction until he reached your location. It’s very lucky you were able to…”
“The hell!? You mean another digimon slipped through without you guys noticing?” The hell was going on? Rage against the police be damned, DRT was NOT this incompetent. Something was not right, everything about the last 24 hours was off and left a sour taste in his mouth.
Carmine sighed, “Unfortunately.” She stood up, “Thank you for your time, both of you. Azriel I’d appreciate it if you registered Krystal as your partner before you leave the building, but beyond that you’re all free to go. Your sister is waiting at the front for you. I hope your next few days are free of any life or death encounters with rogue digimon.”
“Thanks I guess.” Azriel sighed, rubbing his face as he tried to digest exactly what it all meant, a task easier said than done. But as much as he’d have liked to try and figure things out with Carmine, Krystal had been through enough and deserved some time to recover.
As the DRT officer opened the door shouting echoed into the room, Carmine blinking before she grumbled, rushing out to take care of the problem. From the sounds of it, the dynohumon had defrosted and was bellowing over and over about something…stepping into the hallway Azriel and Krystal could barely make anything he was saying out. They lingered at the door for a while, much like everyone else in the building had been caught up in the commotion, listening to the digimon’s incensed bellows. Then suddenly he had a hallway coherent sentence, “To the new dawn! Ad Victoriam!”
Ad Victoriam…
The words echoed in Krystal’s skull, paws gripping her skull as the noise grew louder and louder. Endlessly the words reverberated inside her head, the noise drowning out everything else, eyes wrenching shut from it. Suddenly brief images assailed her, the sights searing themselves into her mind despite how little sense they made to her. A huge door, a towering slab that dwarfed most digimon. A market, filled with various digimon… including… the dynohumon… the same dynohumon? But he was smiling, he looked friendly… a far cry from raging beast that had attacked them. The last thing to flash through her mind was the image of a taomon and pokomon.
Krystal stumbled, Azriel quickly grabbing her and helping her stay up, “Hey hey, what’s wrong?”
“I… don’t know… I just… I think…” she took a breath, “I think I’ve seen that dynohumon before. He was different… kinder.” She shivered, Azriel gently patting her back, “Azriel… do you think, maybe the reason he’s like that is because of… me?” The implications were terrible, the shudder refusing to leave her body.
Azriel looked around, biting his lip, “Probably should keep that down Krystal, come on, let’s get Amaya and talk this through.”
Elsewhere, within the DRT station, Carmine came to a stop in front of the dynohumon’s cell, the dull hum of the laser bars drowned out by the prisoner’s ranting and raving. Several officers, both human and digimon, had gathered around the raging creature behind the bars, ready to move against him if he managed to escape. Carmine shook her head, “You certainly are a loud one; you know some people are actually trying to get work done here?” Her response was a simple roar of anger, making her sigh, “Oh yes, you’re so scary… so scary a kid with a toy crossbow managed to make you look like a bitch.”
The green skinned digimon snarled, glaring at her, “You don’t know anything!”
She scoffed, “Oh please illuminate me then, where did you come from? Neat little trick managing to elude our tracking sensors.”
“Ha, I’d bet you’d like to know.”
She shook her head, “Oh so you want to try playing cute now? Kinda late for that mister…what was that thing you shouted? Apple boredom? Sounds stupid to me.” He growled, she just smirked, “Aw, did I hurt your feelings? Tell you what…I’ll apologize if you tell me why you’re here.” Silence and a glare were his answer, Carmine’s teeth started to grind, “I’m willing to bet it has something to do with that renamon doesn’t it? You seemed to hone in on her and ignored everything else until her friends got in the way.”
She crossed her arms, staring him dead in the eyes, “So what is it? You a jilted lover or something?”
“You know so very little wretched worm… the winds of change are blowing across the worlds, a maelstrom from which none of you pathetic little vermin shall be able to crawl out from. Mountains shall be leveled… deserts become oceans of blood… rivers barren, forests scorched. Cities shall be brought crumbling down on your very ears, and when the hurricane passes by, from the ashes shall arise a leader truly fit to reign as sovereign!” His words spoken the digimon sat down, growling and glaring at his captors.
Carmine bit her lip, turning to leave, ordering them to keep a watch on their guest. “Well this is wonderful.” Her lips moved, but the sound was so low as to be nonexistent, “3 digimon come through without our knowledge, two of which were definitely hostile. And apparently both of them picked a fight with that renamon… she’s definitely the key to this whole screwed up situation, but of course she’s got amnesia and can’t help me in the slightest. It’s like I’m in an anime or something.” She sighed, shaking her head, “Damn it, at this rate I may just have to get Raymond involved.”
“Lieutenant Carmine?”
She blinked, jumping a little as she turned, “Uh, yeah what is it?”
“The two tamers are leaving the station now ma’am. You sure that it’s okay?”
She gave a nod, “Yeah, its fine let them go. Those two obviously had no idea why our loud friend attacked them…though that renamon is definitely something else.” She rubbed her chin, before looking to the officer, “Have some of our men keep an eye on them, especially the guy and his renamon.” The officer nodded, heading off to take care of the order as she went into her office and sat down. “Azriel… I’ll give you credit for your guts kid… jury is still out on whether or not you’re an idiot. Guess we’ll find out in time.”
Azriel let out a sneeze as they walked out of the station, rubbing his nose, “Damn dusty DRT station.” He sighed, looking around as they started walking away, “Alright, looks like the coast is clear…Krystal, you sure about what you saw?”
The renamon nodded, Amaya and patamon blinking, “Saw what?”
The vixen sighed, “I saw the dynohumon… it was a brief glimpse, but I’m certain it was him.” She held herself, shivering lightly, “Only he was so much… well friendlier looking. He looked happy, nice… not a rampaging monster.”
“Alright, so maybe he was a nice guy once upon a time…people can turn into dicks though, and no matter the type of person he was before, I’d say his actions at the park put him in the category of gigantic dick.” Azriel gave Krystal a reassuring pat on the shoulder, “Don’t see why you think it’s your fault he’s such a jerk.”
“Because, he didn’t bother with anyone else… he just went straight for me. He only attacked you and angemon because you got in the way. He had to have a reason to go after me… but it wasn’t just him… I saw other things too… a large door… a taomon and pokomon…” she held her head, “I don’t know, I just feel like this whole situation is my fault.”
Azriel sighed, “Seriously you need to stop over thinking this shit. I mean really? You get a few glimpses of a door and your digivolutions and all of a sudden you think you’re some sort of monster?” he shook his head, nudging her, “For crying out loud you certainly are jumping to conclusions here. Maybe he and the metaltyranomon were up to some shady bullshit, you ever think about that? Maybe you stopped them from pulling something greedy and dangerous, which would certainly make them not like you.”
Amaya smiled, nodding her head, “He’s right… you’re a good person Krystal. There’s no way you’d do anything to make someone like that guy the way he is, he had to have done it to himself.” Patamon gave a nod of his head from his perch on his tamer’s shoulder.
Azriel locked his fingers behind his head, sighing, “Stop worrying about it okay? Look I can say with certainty that you are a perfectly fine person…even if you listen way too much to what my sister says about me.”
“She listens because it’s the truth.” Amaya shot back, smirking.
The renamon let out a small laughed, nodding her head, “Alright… I guess you guys are right. Thanks.”
Azriel smiled, “You good?”
She gave another nod of her head, smiling back at him, “Yeah. I’m fine Azriel. Thank you.” Her paws gripped one another as they walked home, despite the reassurance there was still just something eating at the back the fox’s mind. An unease that she just couldn’t shake loose, no matter how hard she tried.
