Letters to Thyra:
[Masika's Logs]:
Papers continued to fly about the room, and Masika had to bite her lip to keep from screaming. It was if there was no controlling the chaos in her mind OR on her desk! It had been another long day. Thyra had only been gone a short while and, already it seemed as though Masika's life was out of control. As the Ambassador of Foreign Affairs for the Leothaun of Qualdralis, it was as if she never had time at home anymore. Which struck her as karma because it was only a short while before she claimed the house to be too empty without her lover, a prison she wished to escape...and now, she only wanted some time to sit inside that emptiness and relax!!
As it had turned out,the council members of each district of Qualdralis had called a meeting. More and more of their kind had taken to space, venturing to neighboring and outside planets, starting business of trade and the like...and since it was Masika who was near infamous for starting this strange new 'trend', she was placed in charge of a special project...something the council members thought of as a “promotion” and yet Masika saw it as nothing more than torture.
She had gotten this 'promotion' only a few days after Thyra had left for a war on an allied planet. While Thyra was offering support to her old friends, and helping to protect what were now consider Leothaun “allies”, Masika's job was to gather more such allies, to conference with them, to help discuss terms of Embassies on Foreign Planets as well as scout other planets wishing to hold a “conference” to see if their planet was well-suited for Leothaun kind, that it could be considered safe and habitable.
Since then her life had been full of boring meetings, ship crashes, clashes of clans on planets she did not even know existed...and...now that she had finally taken a break from her official documents and such, she realized that she had gotten a letter from Thyra.
The letter had been stamped as a week old. Masika had been away and had never been notified of the mail. It had been stacked under her paperwork from past conferences, now long overdue and being demanded by Leothaun nobles and such. But who cared about the nobles?! Why had she not been told of this sooner?! She debated for just a second the right thing to do. Plow through her work and then read the letter...no...no matter what her business and professional side told her, this was was her love. The fact she had even debated for a moment wracked her body with guilt. How she had longed to hear from her mate...for some word. Now she was tormented a grief she had never felt before...a mixture of guilt and longing for that distant person again...maybe Thyra thought she was being ignored? Such a thought was too much and so, rushing to grab ink and a quill for a response, Masika quickly scanned the contents of the letter...making sure there was nothing urgent so that she may read it a second time, really take it in, soak it up for what it was...this bit of Thyra she held in her hands.
Thyra was fine...
The battles had been small thus far. Not very many surprise attacks and the battle was more political than anything else. She had been able to write a letter because most days things were at a stand-off with the opposing force. She described it as the “longest staring contest she had ever been in...” and then naturally she told Masika she loved her and asked her how Masika had been while she had been away (and to answer the question honestly at that). That's where the flying paper part had happened as Masika desperately started the long battle for a proper response.
Masika had dipped her quill a thousand times over...restarting a letter a thousand times too as she pasted on a smile and tried to write something that might make Thyra not have to worry about her. But, every time she finished a letter, she crumpled it up and tossed it across the room. Thyra would see past it all...she knew Masika better than that. So, as the inkwell seemed to dry up and at that point where more ink was upon Masika's face than on any actual paper or parchment...well...she knew she had to give in and tell Thyra exactly what had been on her mind:
“Hello my love,
How is War?
(scribbled out word), (more scribbles out words), (marks of nervous quill tapping)...I HATE MY JOB, OKAY?!?”
“I miss you so much it is maddening...the first week of mornings without you there were so...awful. I did not know what to do with myself. I paced around the house hating the silence and the space. This hut was lacking...laughing, arguing even...noise...LIFE!!! All the while more and more letters came piling under the door. In your absence, the Council members here thought it wise to give me something they consider a 'promotion'. Psssht. Hardly something to brag about.”
“Can you believe we used to worry about murderers, thieves, a Synx? Things in space that might actually kill us because we were deliberately heading into dangerous situations?? Now you're at war, bringing honor to your name, and I'm crash landing on planets with giant Horses in power armor and wandering forests and having arrows pointed at my chest! But they call this a promotion?!?!”
She was venting, she was rambling...and even though she wanted to tell the truth, she knew that admitting she was about killed several times would only scare Thyra, distract her, and maybe cause herself harm or that of her troops. She wanted to tell Thyra everything like they used to before her mate had left...to just curl up together and discuss everything and anything until the moon was on its way down and the sun was finally waking up. Each description of the events seemed worse than the last.
“The ships they used were old without anyone to keep it in check...and Engine blew and the captain fled as I crashed down through the atmosphere of a planet of humanoid-equine peoples called the Equelarius. Good thing the military was run by the Ambassadors son...he only had to carry me to a medic since I didn't actually drown in a lake upon impact...”
“Did you know there is a planet where Cat people are trying to kill other people and a Werewolf keeps the people safe but, the people hate the Werewolf? I think he was framed for murder...I dunno, I felt the need to go meet him anyways. What was the worst that could have happened? He only had 2 little wolf children that tried to kill anyone that got near him. Thank the Gods that a journal doesn't count as a weapon or intent to harm, right?”
“Did you know in Equelarius, the punishment for a Captain not going down with his ship is death? I wonder if they ever caught the Captain that abandoned mine...Thank goodness he was not a Leothaun, right?”
“Can we just NOT like other planets and go back to how we used to be? I'm starting to think there is a reason that Leothaun mostly keep to themselves...”
By the end of it all, her brow had furrowed so much she had a headache. Her mouth felt dry and hand was cramping. Line after line was blotted and scratched out, her gown was covered in ink, and ink was bleeding through her current page as she had only just STARTED to complain noting that Rias' home planet had come up int terms of discussion when it came to “allies”. But alas, the same rang true as before. She wanted to vent, she wanted to tell Thyra everything. But for once, it was not Thyra's job to be her support, to be that rock. If anything, it was Masika's turn to do that now. Though Thyra claimed to be fine, even in her writing, Masika could she that she was exhausted. Thyra had said she felt they were doing near nothing, it seemed pointless her being there...but now it was too late to come back...and Masika knew that was code saying that Thyra missed her and wished desperately she could come back home.
Now that she thought about it, Thyra probably wrote her letters over and over again too...the thought bringing a brief smile to Masika's face because they were a mess together. Just as close in person as they were at a distance. So, straightening up at her desk again, clearing away the clutter and cleaning the quill before she dipped it again, Masika decided to give this response thing one last shot:
“My love,
I am so happy that I got to hear from you. I will admit I had been getting worried. I am very sorry for the late reply, the Council has had me quite busy. After you left they piled on more responsibilities to keep my mind occupied and the job has me constantly traveling. I am hardly ever home. I did not expect a letter so soon, but, I will set up someone to transport the letter to my various locations now that I know there is not too much action where you are stationed, this way we can keep in touch. I have actually been traveling to other planets. I only wish they made stops where you were. Maybe then I could hide away in your tent with you until they send you home? It's a nice thought anyways...
but my job is...stressful. Then again, what job isn't though? Soem recent planets I traveled to was Equelarius. They are humanoid-equine persons and their military wears this amazing power armor. I think it would fascinate you. Then another planet I forget the name of...but it was not much to brag about. Close-minded humanoids fighting some clan battle with...cats? Giant cats? I'm not sure...feline clans that were evil and some werewolf fights them off to protect a highly ungrateful village. I did not give that place the okay. An Embassy would have never done any good.
I miss you so much...sometimes it hurts. But, I remind myself that this thing is only temporary. You will back in my arms before I know it...and until then, your letters make my heart beat and they bring a smile to my face. I love you Thyra...and I hope to hear back from you soon.
Always yours,
---Masika”
Holding the letter up, Masika grinned...satisfied at last at what she had written and conveyed. There were no lies, but the venting and stress now lay behind her, crumpled on the floor where it belonged. Maybe she might bring up such frustrations with Natalia or Idai some time later. But for now, Thyra only deserved the best she could give...a smile and glimmer of hope, and the reminder that time was forever moving forward and they would be together again some day. So, the letter was folded and placed in an envelope...and she would be shipping out that piece of her thoughts and her love come first light.
