An excellent metaphor for greed.
In a lot of dragon lore including J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" Dragons are depicted as greedy creatures that horde gold and gems.
I'm not sure what(if any) backstory this pic has but I can easily imagine this guy's greed caused him to turn into a dragon, doomed to spend eternity guarding the treasure.

Maybe.
If this is one of those magical Furry worlds where this sort of thing is common, maybe.
But in a more "realistic world" it could also make it impossible to sell the gold because "HOLY SHIT A DRAGON!"
It could be kind of a hubris thing where the gold is cursed. The first person to find it is turned into a greedy dragon that kills anyone that tries to take his treasure. When someone slays the dragon the gold transforms whoever killed the previous guardian, preventing anyone from taking the gold.

Matt HEY I WAS GONNA DO A NARNIA REFERENCE ;-; FOR NARNIA! Wait a sec, they changed it to, for high calorie count and cholestrol? Who do they think we are? McDonalds? :|
People keep making references to stuff like the Hobbit but this kind of thing can go back even further.
In Norse mythology dwarfs were quite greedy. One dwarf named Fafnir stole some cursed gold from his father by killing him. Loki had given his father the gold in the first place in exchange for Odin and Honir who were captured by the dwarfs. Fafnir became paranoid and more greedy and eventually the cursed gold made him a dragon.
Le moar you know.

People leaving comments about Narnia and Lord of the Rings, and all I can think about is Fafnir from Norse Mythology.
Moral of the story? Don't take ransom money from Loki, especially if he stole it from a pissed-off shape-shifting dwarf, unless you're a... glutton for punishment.
