[Masika's Logs]:
The wind blew a leaf across Masika's palm, causing her to stir from sleep. She thought the leaf to be playful touches and tickles, and when she clenched her fist, trying to trap the person responsible, all she felt was a crunch and when she fully opened her eyes, she realized it had all been a dream...that it was merely a leaf, and that Thyra had been gone for the better part of three days now.
The smile that had been on her face mere moments before faded away...her eyes glazed over as she stared blankly across the bed which was much too big now. Even with all that space to herself, Masika had taken to curling up on her side as she had always done, and hugging a pillow close to her face as to make it seem as if there was a presence there.
She had slept for a good many hours, and yet, she did not feel as though she had slept at all. She lacked the energy she used to have, and her feet drug across the floor as she made her way to the kitchen. Everything seemed to move in slow motion as she reached the cabinets and pulled out her mug and sugar. She set those aside filling her coffee pot with water, reaching for the ground coffee, and setting up the machine in hopes of soon sitting down with a cup of liquid motivation for the day she now had to face.
For the first time in her life, watching the coffee slowly drip into the pot almost seemed borderline fascinating, thus she knew she had been losing it. Even once she sat down with the cup hot in her hands, she did not drink but rather, took in the smell and gazed longingly out her kitchen window, into the distance where she recalled what lead to these lonely mornings merely weeks prior:
"I have some news..." Thyra whispered as she lay in bed next to her loved one, "...I will be going away for awhile."
"Well, that's not always happy news." Masika smiled,"But, you have been gone before. How long is it this time? A month? Two months? We have done this before, you know?"
"Not like this I'm afraid." Thyra said with a faint grin,"That council we met at? The alliance we made? Well, they are at war and..." she trailed off before finishing her sentence,"I was recruited."
Masika froze. Could they do this? Was this legal? Thyra could see the scared and anxious expression on Masika's face, could read her worry from a mile away,"When I moved back here, I sold my soul to guarding this planet from outside threats. But, this also means protecting those that Qualdralis signs an alliance with. This is mandatory, I have no choice but to go my love."
Masika knew better than to argue, and even if she wanted to, there was nothing she could think to say. Ever since Thyra had joined up with the newly formed militia of the planet, she had been gone for a few months here and there in 'prep' of missions and possible battle, but this time, it was for real. "How long?"
"Almost a year..."
Masika lay flat on her back, looking at the fan blades as they whirled in a circle...eventually it made her dizzy and she had to close her eyes. As she did though, a single tear rolled down her cheek. She had been trying not to cry, but, as the tear fell, she was enveloped by Thyra who pulled her close. The volcano Leothaun ran her fingers through Masika's hair, her voice a gentle whisper: "It will be okay my love...we will be okay...and I will be back before you know it."
After all of that, Thyra had been given a little over a month to prepare. she could not share mission details so, most of the time, Masika was in the dark. Thyra would be gone for a few days, and then come home packed with gear that she had to sort, fix, and learn how to use. There were many instances of communication between her and her command, and for awhile, Masika felt ignored.
But then they gave Thyra the chance to be home all the time and suddenly Masika had felt smothered. She remembered how little she had gotten done those last couple of weeks because Thyra just wanted to lounge and to talk, and to enjoy her company. This had gotten her in trouble many-a-times with the Temple...but, she was eventually able to get them to understand her situation, and even though she had her instances of being annoyed, now she was thankful for all that time she had gotten with Thyra and how her scent could still be found among the pillows, the sheets, and even stray pieces of laundry here and there...almost as if she had never truly left home.
Thinking back to the day of departure she had had seen even the toughest of Leothaun's cry and even Thyra was of no exception. The woman's body shook, her voice quivered as she held Masika close and said there was no way that she could ever "hug her enough". They gave each other one last kiss before Thyra boarded the ship that would take her to a planet Masika had never seen and only ever heard in passing...
...and taking now her first sip of coffee the gloom weighed heavy on her again. The silence was too great, the house feeling too empty. The laughter, the morning chats and grumbles, even the yelling was missing from this hut that used to carry with it such a large feeling of comfort.
"I wonder if I can ever make this place feel like home again without you..." Masika whispered to herself, still gazing out the window: "Come back home safe to me, my love."
