With the help of my friend Tony, who wanted to see the Chevy I'm buying whom I've dubbed Cassandra, I actually managed to force the old rusted hood joints to finally relax and show off what's under the hood of my $350 purchase!! I could tell just by looking at her that Cassandra isn't a quitter! No Chevy is! And judging by her condition under the hood I think she'll be making her way back to the road very soon! All she needs is someone stubborn as she is who won't let her go quietly into the night, and I've never been one to give up easy. Let's see if I can't live up to my Greaser Image!

Yeah like I said, I'd just tear that insulation down out of there, it's falling off anyway and who knows, hanging down in your face it might have some eye-irritant dust coming off of it if it's true insulation. That or knowing you you'll probably find a way to re-attach it wont you? ^^ I frankly think the hood will look better with it off, honestly the underside of the hood doesn't look rusted at all, maybe we can save it. :)
I think I can be a lot of help to you buddy, her engine looks very similar to Mitzi's.

lol I'm flattered you have such confidence in my abilities to not only be able to re-affix the insulation but also save the hood! lol I'm happy that I project such a can do attitude that all challenges come into question when I enter the mix! lol honestly though I hadn't considered salvaging the insulation, it's in pretty rough shape and I was just considering removing it and replacing it. I'll need to anyway to get a look at the hood. And that might be an optical illusion, make no mistake, there's a lot of rust damage to both the top and underside of the hood. The unanimous consensus from everyone whose seen her has been that the hood is shot. There's a lot of parts on the underside where it's just jagged rusted metal. lol though of course putting me on such a high pedestal I can't exactly give up with out even trying to restore the hood now can I? lol if I listened to the Consensus I'd never had bought Cassandra in the first place, and now that I have and got the hood open everyone's shocked that she's in as good of condition as she is.
I know you can Bucko! And it's interesting to note how everything has seemed to loosen up in stages. First I couldn't get her hood to open at all, then I managed to pry it open enough to get those original pictures, then there was the passenger door which didn't want to open well at first and after some time and care that's working just fine now, then there's the steering wheel that moves despite the fact Mr. Buddy thought it was locked and it shouldn't be, then the Dashboard I could never get open that opened easily the other day when I was up there with Mr. Buddy, and now the hood finally opening the rest of the way and not too difficultly after we got it open the once. I think this project is going to move at Cassandra's pace. When she's ready things will just sort of fall into place provided I don't give up and I keep determined!

Lol you're inspirational buddy, I could benefit from hanging out with an optimistic guy like yourself. You'd be the one that'd hold everyone together in an apocalyptic situation. Okay I looked it up real quick, here's what I found out about the hood insulation. The first, it serves as a noise dampener, so the engine isn't so loud through it but I doubt it makes THAT much of a difference. The other is something I doubt you'll have much issue with in Florida and that is that it helps the engine heat up in cold weather. It's pretty warm down there, you might actually benefit by taking it OUT.. keep her engine cooler.
Indeed it must be an optical illusion, well luckily I don't think a hood will be that expensive, even cheaper if you can find it in a junkyard.. that is if your heart can take going into a junkyard.
It's her bro, you two are bonding more and more, she's opening up to you. ;) Old cars are weird like that. Like, I was working under Mitzi's dashboard one day taking out the faulty temp gauge and after I did her blinkers stopped working! Then I came back the next weekend and without even touching anything since then when I went on a drive they mysteriously were working again and have worked since lol!

lol you know that idea weirdly made me smile to imagine, I'm glad to know that if the world ever ends I already have a vote of confidence in my ability to keep things together! And true on both accounts. It'd be nice to have if I ever drive up north but I don't think that it makes THAT much difference noise wise. I always just figured it was up there in case the engine started to overheat to keep the hood from setting on fire!
I can manage a junkyard buddy, lol thought if it DOES need replacing I could always ask you to call Big M and see if he'd be willing to help you hook your friend up with some parts.
I love that about older things, there was heart in them. They were built to last, not for profit, not with intentionally bad parts, they were built to keep running and be dependable for the families that used them. They were the result of men's livelihood, their passion, their trade, and their craft! When you make something by hand and you put your sweat and tears into it, in my opinion, it will always last longer than something thoughtlessly mass produced for profit and not much else. It rubs off on things when care is put into them!

Yeah dude, I bet if society ever ends you'll be one of the guys that would lead a band of people across the wastes and found your own settlement. Mayor Caleb.. can you see it? |: 3
I was concerned about that myself, thinking you'd find a black scorch mark forming in the center of your hood if you took the insulation. But apparently that's not the case, and really thinking about it, if you have THAT much heat that it would burn the hood.. your engine would be toast.... or melted into a puddle..
I could ask Big M if you want. :)
If that's what you call it. XD I guess those craftsmen inserted a little magic into her.

lol Mayor Caleb? XD God help us all!!
lol my main concern is that if you look at the hood from the side it looks like a sandwich with all the layers splitting apart. HOPEFULLY the engine will move freely and she'll be ready to run decently with the needed touch ups. With how solid she looks under the hood I'm hoping that aside from her transmission most of the work will be body work and redoing her interior.
lol well with how highly you've been speaking of me you've got me geared up enough to want to give the hood a shot at repairs! lol I'll contact you when I get that far. He'll be plan b.
A life of her own, like any Chevy, with a heart and will to go on!

Yes, Mayor Caleb.. http://sta.sh/21vvuis5zj8
Your dad will probably tell you to take the spark-plugs out and squirt some oil into her cylinders to loosen them up before trying to start her or crank her.
Sounds good man, let me know.

She did when she was parked, but what's under the hood is still in remarkably good condition so a restoration and tune up won't be too hard. So if she doesn't atm she will within a month or two of my attention. I'll make sure to post updates ^w^ Thank you very much for the comment! It's lovely to hear from you again!
