National Park Service: A 100-Year Heritage
On August 25, 1916, Congress authorized the establishment of the National Park Service, an agency tasked to manage the growing number of federally protected parks and monuments within the United States. Prior to this act, the Department of Interior's responsibility to these areas have been largely ambiguous, leaving means of maintenance to various parties, including the U.S. Army.

I agree! Thank you for sharing your thoughts! (sorry for the delayed response)
Unfortunately for me, the only national park I have visited is Acadia in 2010. Even that doesn't seem to count since I've only seen a tiny portion of it (the Mount Cadillac area) in a short span of time. I've been to several national historic parks (Lowell, Minuteman, Yorktown, Saratoga, etc.), but that's a whole different category.

I can't say i've ever been to Acadia, but I plan to visit all of the country's national parks in my lifetime, and re-visit them again and again. If you ever get a chance to visit the ones out west, then take it as soon as you can, because these parks are truly amazing in every way! I'd personally start with Glacier National Park in Montana, it's truly the most beautiful place i've ever seen, and considering its competition, that's saying something!
