Blood leopards are the result of successful genetic crossbreeding of jaguars and extinct sabre-toothed cats. As such "leopard" is a misnomer but the name seems to have stuck. Females are roughly a third the size of males and are less colourful, retaining only a small mane. They are however vicious and utterly remorseless in the defense of their young. Their chief source of prey are herds of bison, which the females stalk and drive much like lions. They will occasionally go for pronghorn, deer or, rarely, livestock.
