The door seemed far too large to be held in place by just the two hinges that squeaked slightly when they opened. “The Briar Patch Home for Troubled Teens” looked more like something out of a horror film than an actual place to live, but the sounds of hooves against wooden floorboards made him instinctively move away from the large wooden slab that opened inward. Standing in the doorway was a short-ish female with horns wrapping around her ears. She wore a sleeveless turtleneck sweater thingy and a black skirt that stopped about mid-calf to show off her vibrantly coloured hooves. He wasn’t quite sure what to think of her, but he had no choice in the matter, she was his new guardian.
“Oh, you’re early. Please come in, I’ll have some tea set out.” She smiled broadly, her nose twitching as she watched the two men step through the door. She readjusted her glasses before closing the large wooden chocolate bar behind them.
“Corbin, Tusk, set the kettle on, please?” She called to two people who responded with groans of displeasure before footsteps shuffled towards what he assumed was the kitchen. “This way, please.”
They were swept into a side room that looked like a drawing room from days long passed, but still held bookcases filled with knowledge, just waiting to be read. The tall wallaby led his charge by gently pushing the shoulder of the boy in front of him until they both sat down with a fwump in large comfy velvet-lined chairs. Looking around, the younger noticed that everything was spotless. Completely, incredibly, unfathomably clean. He barely noticed when his name was spoken, taking a moment to respond. “Huh, what? Yeah?”
“I asked if you know why you’re here, dear.” The ram-goat-thing woman smiled at him across a rather broad desk that only barely hid the claw marks across it. It dawned on him, she had a very slight accent, across the pond he guessed.
“Yeah. I went to the store when they wouldn’t buy us food.”
“And do you know why you got in trouble?”
“Because I took the van.”
“And...?”
“I hotwired it... and stole it... from the garage... without a license.” He shrugged, watching her face and slowly shrinking in his seat as her face never changed from the low smile, a caring face that almost seemed disappointed. Before she could respond, the larger man beside him scoffed, saying how it was disgraceful that a twelve-year-old could drive at all, though his commentary was cut off by a ‘whoomph’ sound from across the atrium. It almost sounded like rice or maybe flour exploded as it hit the floor.
“Pardon me a moment.” She lept across the room and quickly clopped over towards the assumed kitchen, a moment later returning with a crow and a... water deer? Each had a look of shame on their faces and had some kind of pale sludge smeared across them. The pink-haired deer had their ear in a vicegrip by the woman, the crow had his beak held shut. “Now, once you two are done cleaning your rooms, we will talk.”
She sent them up the stairs that spiraled up the main hall to the upper floor, the young one watching as they flipped her off from the stairs. She smirked, marking that she’d seen it.
“Sorry for that, but it seems we won’t be having any tea just yet. Mr Jango, will you be staying for dinner tonight?” The young wolf looked up at the tall creature in the next seat who admitted he would love to, but was far too busy. She pouted slightly before replying, “You’ll just have to join us another time then.”
They agreed and quickly signed some papers, she walked him to the door and kissed his cheek before locking the heavy wooden door behind him and moving back over to the young wolf still in her office. She rested a hand on his blue-furred shoulder, making him jerk up to see what was going on. She lead him through the atrium to the dining room, a large table sat in the middle, each table setting slightly different depending on who sits where. She pointed out a seat near her chair with a light blue cup, the plate with a slight chip in the side of the plastic which had been covered in a strip of duct tape, noting that would be his seat. He was millions of miles away, not paying attention as they wandered the halls. He was going to get lost anyways.
His mind wandered from memory to memory as they went from room to room. He remembered the first time he’d ever been behind the wheel of a car, he remembered the adrenalynn picking up in his veins as he couldn’t see the road when he could hit the pedals, and how he couldn’t reach the pedals when he could see the road. He had been so free, more free than in his entire life before.
He was ripped from his thoughts when he heard a shriek from down the hall. A smaller goat came barrelling down the hall with her hair pulled back into a braid that ran the length of her mohawk-cut head. Her clothes were sopping wet and she looked horrified.
“Mother!!!” She screamed at the equally short woman who had been leading him around who sighed. The younger had dark grey fur with red markings, similar to her mother though somehow more.... Beautiful. He stood staring slack jawed at the gorgeous creature dripping in the hall. Despite her unhappiness, he could see her eyes were soft and her body curved gently, just enough to show in her wet clothes that she was female, but in baggier clothing she could easily pass for a boy. “They did it again!”
“Via, please, go get cleaned up.” She hugged her daughter, sending her off down the hall. Not a moment passed before she carefully trotted down the hall towards the cackling laughter. They rounded the corner and his nose was assaulted by the stinging smell of smoke from a cigarette. He could see down the hall a bit further was an open door with a sharp staircase within that exuded smoke like a heavy fog, but in front of them was a pair of young boys, another wolf and a... He wasn’t quite sure what the second was, but they were rolling from laughter, both holding their bellies in pain. He felt a soft touch cover his ears, folding them down over themselves before a sharp whistle made him shrink and cringe. The ringing in his ears stung as she berated the two trouble makers and lead them forcibly to a pair of rooms back the way they had come.
“How many times do I have to tell you not to pick on the girls? Des, you are grounded. This is your last warning.” She seemed so eerily calm as she held his red ear in one hand, the other boy suffering the same fate. “And don’t you dare say this was Luther’s idea, who is also grounded, for the record.”
He tried to keep up with the mistress of the house as she wheeled them to their rooms. His blue and black tail bounded behind him as he followed the two older boys, the one she called Luther had to be at least 18 while the other seemed to be about his own age. Maybe a year older. The red one’s tail slithered shyly as though it had a mind of its’ own, and he could swear he saw it smile.
She gently pushed the two into their rooms next to each other, and he could see through the open doors the red wolf had band posters covering the walls, floor to ceiling. His bookshelf was overflowing and his desk held what looked like a terrarium. Or maybe an ant farm? He couldn’t tell. The other room had a laptop, pens, pencils, notebooks, written pages strewn about, and an equally full bookcase that looked full of novellas. His bed wasn’t tousled like the wolf’s but looked cleanly lived-in. They each had a window just in front of their desks, but one was open while the other locked shut and hidden with drapes.
“I will come get you two for dinner, but in the meantime you will not leave your rooms. You are welcome to read or clean or write, but no technology.” She held out her hands and they each gave her their cell phones, small grey bricks of plastic and wires. How easy it would be to rewire them... turn them into something else...
“Now, where were we?” She turned back to him after closing the doors. “Right! Your room. It’s this way.”
They trotted off further down the long halls, her tiny tail twitching as they walked. She was almost shorter than him even with the significant age difference, and he couldn’t help but smile. It was a nice looking house, she seemed to know what to do with all these kids, and above all he felt like she really cared about them. They stopped at the door closest to the stairs, a small sign taped to the wood said ‘welcome, new guy’ it was signed with a ‘V’ that looped around and almost looked like an upside down star or a flower, he couldn’t tell.
When the door opened, it was so bright he had to squint for a moment before his eyes painfully adjusted. The desk was neatly cleaned off, the bed was made with fresh sheets, the window cracked open just enough to let some air into the room which smelled like the trees outside. There were also two boxes on the bed, wrapped up neatly in brown wrapping paper and twine with tags on them saying they were addressed to him.
“Welcome to the family, Zero.” She hugged him, it was the warmest and most loving attention he’d had in a long time, and even though tears welled up in his eyes it was difficult to hug her back. “Welcome home.”
