Painter IX.V + Wacom Graphire; ~10-12 hours of work; Soundtrack: Manowar, DragonForce, Moonspell

Started as another speed-paint, but I decided to detail and refine it some more. Spent a little too long on it, I think, and I've got to brush up on those anatomy skills... or lack thereof. Other than that, I'm pretty satisfied with it.
Chances are, most people won't recognize the character, but this is actually a fanart of Bane, from the old 2D Beat-em-Up "WeaponLord". Used to play that on the SNES, back in the day, but I had pretty much forgotten about it over the years. Stumbled over it again recently, and decided to do some fanart. It's a fun fighting game, by 16-bit standards, with nice animations, stages and character designs. The Barbarian/ Fantasy theme and armed combat really stand out against the huge amount of Street Fighter clones that popped up back then. It was also made by Namco, and could be considered an early predecessor of the now popular Soul Calibur series.
Anyhow, I like most of the character designs of the game, but I think Bane is my favourite. A tough, fur and leather-clad barbarian, with a huge-ass stone hammer, and a mask apparently made from a sabre-tooth wolf (?) ... which for some reason also happens to have horns? Hard to top that.

I still play it on my SNES (amongst other rarities) and I also see it as the SNES's less known Soul Calibur. :3 The pace is slow and rough but works well with the somewhat awkward controls, weapons hit and tear through body and armor with impressively realistic visuals and audio for the platform and the combo/finishing freedom was as rare for that gaming generation as the setting was unique for a fighting game. Oh and the ads, although not nearly as extreme as the game's content, were some of the bloodiest I had seen in magazines. :P I am more of a Korr/Divada player, for their more combo-esque style, but I do respect Bane's raw power, especially when he starts swinging that hammer multiple times through my battered characters. XD I really wish we could get a sequel but I'm afraid it would have to be somewhat censored by today's standards. :P
You have my respect for still playing the game, and on an actual SNES console, at that. ( I don't have a working one anymore, so I'm limited to emulators. )
I agree that a true sequel would be nice - Maybe something similar to Soul Calibur, but with a darker and more realistic style. ( And after just completing Dead Space on my 360, I'm not sure if they'd have to tone down the violence a lot. It would certainly have to be a game for adult players, though. )

In german I would say "Du hast einen verbummelt." Which pretty much means that youre a bit nuts. Thats the first thing that comes to my mind when I see this picture. I mean seriously you are putting SO MUCH detail in it that it reaches photo quality in some parts of the picture. And to do this in 10-12 hours is just...well a bit crazy.
It's an incredible piece of art. You never stop to amaze me.

Hey! I remember WeaponLord! Man, when I used to read about it in the magazines, it was so hyped to be the best next thing, with the complex moves and violence and stuff. Too bad it didn't take off. I remember it on the Genesis. B3
Anyway, excellent and dazzling stuff as always, man. The blur effect is fantastic! o.o

It's probably not perfect - But frankly, other than Street Fighter II itself, I don't remember any 16-bit Beat-em-Ups as good as this one. And as I mentioned in my description, the Fantasy/ Barbarian theme and the weapons made the game feel pretty fresh and different.
Glad you liked my fanart - Thanks for the feedback!

Hah hah... Thanks! Go for it, I say! When I was looking for references and fanart, before I did this painting, I only found about half a dozen pics of the character - And most of it mediocre at best. :( I'm sure all fans of him would appreciate some more decent fanart, even if it's just a quick sketch or whatever.
Well, I'm playing "Viking: Battle for Asgard" now - I suppose that one's close enough. And apparently there's a Conan game out for the 360, as well, but I don't know if it's any good.
Anyhow - Thanks! I was never really a very fast or particularly efficient artist, but I'm trying to work on that. Some parts of this, like the background, came surprisingly easy, actually. Didn't hurt that I just recently worked on a few pics with a similar setting. :P
